๐Ÿ‘‰Follow @Busterandwhiskers for more Tips on Raising a Calm, Well-Adjusted Dog A common complaint dog owners have, especially now with many people returning to work, is that their dog is destructive or disruptive when left alone. Their dog may bark, howl, destroy furniture, or have accidents in the home. Fortunately, a lot of people think that their dog has separation anxiety and it turns out to be something much less distressing for their pup, such as boredom, lack of exercise or stimulation, or the need to brush up on their house manners and basic obedience training. When dogs suffer from Separation Anxiety, they are in extreme distress and essentially are experiencing a panic attack that lasts for the ENTIRE DURATION of time that they are left alone or separated from the person that they are most attached to. Some dogs suffering from Separation Anxiety become anxious when they notice their owners preparing to leave the home. Other dogs become distressed after their guardian leaves, while other dogs try to prevent their parents from even leaving in the first place. If the dog is suffering from Separation Anxiety, the vocalizations or other signs of distress will start within minutes of being left alone and will occur continuously throughout the entire duration of being left alone. When the owner returns home, the pup acts like it has been weeks since they've seen them.๐Ÿ˜ฉ There are many signs to look for that indicate that your dog suffers from Separation Anxiety. Symptoms include constant vocalizations, such as barking, howling, or whining, while you are gone that do not stop; panting; drooling; damaging the exits of your home, such as the front door or windows, while trying to escape; trotting or pacing along a specific path while you are away; or urinating or defecating while home alone. If any of these symptoms occur while you are home, then your pup probably isn't suffering from Separation Anxiety. Setting up a pet camera to observe your pup while left alone may help you diagnose the cause of the problem.๐Ÿ˜Ÿ Does your dog display any symptoms of Separation Anxiety? Follow @Busterandwhiskers for more Tips on Raising a Calm, Well-Adjusted Dog๐Ÿถ When it comes to socializing your pup with other dogs, it's always best to start with small increments and gradually increase exposure. You can start with an interaction with just one friend's dog that you know is both gentle and friendly. If your dog is timid or older, meet in a neutral location and walk them together. Start at a distance with a good amount of space between you, and walk parallel to one another. Once the dogs seem calm, you can get closer and allow them to sniff one another. Sniffing the other dog is a critical part of the meet and greet, as it allows your dog to gain valuable information about the other dog. There is no need to be embarrassed about your dog sniffing the other dog's behind, this a natural part of the socialization process. Keep the interactions only long enough for the dogs to get acquainted and have a neutral experience. Each progressive interaction can get longer and longer. Be sure to look for any signs of discomfort or stress in your dog, such as growling, tense body posture, or tail between their legs. Ideally, you will end the interaction before your dog starts to show any of these signs of stress. If your dog does growl or display any sign of fear, it is important for you to remain calm, remove your dog a safe distance away from the situation, and let them decompress. If your pup is able to calm down quickly, you can try exposing your dog to the other dog again. If your dog is taking a while to decompress, it may be best to end the session for the day and try again tomorrow. The goal is for your dog to have a neutral or positive interaction with the other dog, not a negative experience. If this is something you are struggling with, you may want to reach out to a professional Dog Trainer or sign your pup up for daily Socialization Walks with us, LINK IN BIO. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ• How long did your pup's Socialization Process take? ๐Ÿ‘‰Follow @Busterandwhiskers for more Tips on Raising a Calm, Well-Adjusted Dog Just like with any type of socialization, the key to socializing your dog with humans is gradual and continuous exposure. The best time to socialize your dog with people is as a puppy, but adult dogs can also be properly socialized with humans, it just takes more time, patience, and smaller increments of exposure. The more that your dog is exposed to a variety of people, the better your dog will react when meeting new people. Be sure to expose your dog to men, women, children, babies, elderly people, as well as people in wheelchairs, walkers, and with canes. Be sure to introduce your dog to people of different skin colors, different heights, different weights and body shapes, as well as diverse dress, including people wearing masks, hoods, puffy jackets, sunglasses, hats, carrying umbrellas, etc. Regular socialization activities, such as daily walks, are a great way to ensure that your dog is exposed to a diverse group of people. In addition, you can invite one or two friends over and host them in a space where your dog is comfortable. Be sure to start slow, making it all about your dog. Start with just one to two friends at a low-key get together. If your dog is timid, have your guests ignore your dog and avoid eye contact, and allow your pup to approach them when he is ready. Your guests can toss or give your pup treats when he approaches them. If your dog is older or more timid, keep the encounters positive and brief. Start with less challenging sessions and progressively build your way up. If your pup is relaxed, he will be able to learn, explore, and have an overall positive experience. Isolation will easily undo socialization, so it is important to avoid keeping your pup isolated as much as possible, especially during this Pandemic. When does Socialization End? ๐Ÿถ Socialization is an ongoing process that never ends. In addition to ensuring that your puppy is properly socialized in the early stages of life, you also need to maintain socialization as your dog gets older. It is common for dog parents to socialize a puppy very well when young, then stop the Socialization Process. This can often cause dogs to develop issues. Socialization does not end at puppyhood. ๐Ÿ•โ€๐Ÿฆบ๐Ÿฉ๐Ÿ• How do you maintain your dogโ€™s Socialization? What advice do you have? Let us know in the comments below๐Ÿ‘‡
