World Heart Day, created by the World Heart Federation, informs people that cerebrovascular disease (CVD), including heart disease and stroke, is the world’s leading cause of death. CVD claims 17.9 million lives each year. There are actions that we can take to prevent and control CVD through education and controlling risk factors such as tobacco use, unhealthy diet and physical inactivity.
Together we can participate in activities to take charge of our heart health and that of others.

According to the National Council on Aging, falls are the leading cause of fatal and non-fatal injuries for older adults. Falls threaten older adults’ safety and independence and generate enormous economic and personal costs. However, falling is not an inevitable result of aging. Through practical lifestyle adjustments, evidence-based fall preventions, and community partnerships, the number of falls among seniors can be substantially reduced.
