It’s never too late to decorate your home for Halloween! Here are a few electrical safety tips to avoid any horror stories of your own:
• Before you decorate, inspect electrical decorations and extension cords and discard anything with damaged wires
• When using extension cords, don’t overload them and keep them out of high-traffic areas
• Use GFCIs for outdoor decorations
• Be careful using dry vegetation like hay in your décor - make sure it is not in contact with any outlets or lighting
• Eliminate open flames and use a rechargeable or battery-powered LED light in your
jack-o-lanterns

Tangled lights can lead to damaged cords and broken sockets. They are also a pain to untangle! An easy, tangle-free way to store holiday lights is to wrap the strands around a piece of cardboard and cover them in paper or fabric to protect the bulbs. Then store them in a sturdy, well-sealed container until next year!

Whether your fireplace is gas or electric, ensure there is at least 3 feet of clearance around it. This goes for space heaters as well. Keep the area around heat sources clear especially of combustible items such as blankets, wrapping paper, and the Christmas tree!

It wouldn’t be the holidays without everything light and bright! However, statistics show that electrical incidents and residential fires increase during the holiday season. Here are our electrical safety tips for installing holiday lights, so you can save the open fire for chestnuts!
• Use holiday lights that are rated for outdoor use and are UL-listed.
• Check your lights before hanging for any broken bulbs, frayed wires, or cracked cords. If they’re damaged, it’s time to replace them!
• Hang lights using light clips or insulated hooks, rather than nails or staples to avoid puncturing protective insulation.
• Pay close attention to the wattage rating on your extension cords and do not overload them.
• Turn off your lights before going to bed or leaving the house.
