We're celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month this month at Cambridge College by sharing fun facts about the countries that make up Latin America. Here's one from Nicaragua: Did you know? Nicaragua is one of the few Latin American Countries that has had a female Head of State. Violeta Chamorro was the country's first and only woman president, serving from 1990-1997. As President of Nicaragua, Chamorro was able to help achieve peaceful reform by ending the civil war and putting an end to mandatory military service. This month is Hispanic Heritage Month! And here at Cambridge College, we are celebrating by sharing some fun and interesting facts about the countries that make up Latin America. Check out this fun fact from Costa Rica: Did you know? Costa Rican Doctor Clodomiro Clorito Picado is the true discoverer of the antibiotic known today as Penicillin. Although the discovery was attributed to Alexander Fleming in 1928, a research study found in 1927 proved Picado to be the true pioneer for his early work. Picado is widely recognized for his many discoveries and research studies in Costa Rica, and a grant was named after him in 1977 by the Costa Rican Ministry of Science and Technology (MICIT) as stimulus and recognition for the prominent scientific and technological work of Costa Rican citizens. Debbie Cavalier has made a successful career in the world of music education and publishing, beginning at Cambridge College in 1993 when she earned her Master’s degree in Education, leading up to her current position as Berklee School of Music’s Senior Vice President of Online Learning and Continuing Education, and as a Grammy award-winning lead singer/keyboard player in the children’s band Debbie and Friends. To kick off Women's History Month, we will be sharing the stories throughout the month of women who have heralded greatness and shown their true inner power as exemplary Cambridge College alumni. The first, Stacey Borden, holds a Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling with a concentration in Trauma and Addictions from Cambridge College. She is also a living embodiment of transformative action as a former incarcerated woman-turned-community activist working to help women inmates achieve lasting success in society upon reentry.
