The friendships made at camp run deep, and seem to last forever. This past weekend, counselors and campers (of all ages) came together to celebrate Janis Barksdale (former camp director's) legacy. Everyone had a great time reminiscing and talking about camp, laughing, singing songs and making s'mores - Thank you to everyone who organized this wonderful reunion! WoHeLo.

Finding Purpose By Tsaiyesi Rhodes
As a young girl, I already knew what I wanted to be when I grew up. My career plan was to be a psychologist and become a therapist. As time went on, my interests grew into the field of marriage and family counseling. During the years of my educational evolution, it was an adamant career choice. I wanted to have an impact on families and help with the client’s home and social environments. Especially, working with the youth.
In my second semester as a transfer student at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, I was introduced to Camp Fire Alabama. In middle school, I was part of mentoring programs such as Girls Inc. and Stairway to Success. Both were facilitated through my school. Each program provided knowledge and introduced me to new experiences. Before joining Camp Fire, I was finding my niche for community service and charity. When I heard about this program, I was interested in trying it out.
Mrs. Gina Weaver and the rest of the staff are excellent administrators of the program. They were truly kind, welcoming, approachable, and always positive. They made volunteering a comfortable and enjoyable experience.
On my first day working with Camp Fire, I was nervous and did not know what to expect. Little did I know, my perspectives were about to change. I was not expecting to have students who were shy, talkative, popular, bullied, or uncomfortable in social settings. The experience was just as new to me as it was to them. The topics we discussed were connecting with the students and with each session they were more actively engaged. The girls tended to interact more with fellow female volunteers. The boys were reluctant but eventually opened up. The more topics we covered such as self-esteem, bullying, teamwork, friendship, respect, etc., the students engaged with each other based on similar experiences, despite the social cliques in the middle school environment. My first semester of sessions was fun, eye-opening, and life-changing. I knew I had to continue to volunteer with Camp Fire. I think I enjoyed the sessions more than the students. The other volunteers were great to work with and were great with the students. The teamwork was phenomenal.
Each semester was better than the last. I admit, I may have spoiled them (just a little) with trinkets and donuts at the end of each semester session. Their appreciation was priceless. I wanted each child to know they mattered and were unique. If I reached just one student, it was all worth my time and effort.
I delayed my decision for graduate school due to a conflict of career choices. I wanted to go into a field that would allow me to provide similar experiences such as Camp Fire does. I consulted the School Counselor at Simmons Middle School, Mrs. Winnie Davis. Through our conversation, I knew my purpose was found via volunteering with Camp Fire Alabama. I never thought I would consider working in a school environment. If I could make an impression among students, School Counseling was the career for me. I applied and was accepted to the UAB School of Education’s program for a Master of Arts in Counseling with a concentration in School Counseling. I am excited to see what the future holds.
