Thursday: A storm system will bring rain showers to much of Illinois with possibly snow in the northern 1/4 by mid afternoon. Thursday evening colder temps will be ushered in changing any leftover rain to snow across central/northern IL. Best chance of accumulations is in the northern 1/4 of IL(I-80/north) where a few to several inches are possible. The snow will become fluffy in the evening and winds will pick up. Given the top layer of snow will probably be crusty, any fluffy snow can really blow around easily. Visibility may be quite low Thursday evening when gusts of 45MPH develop, causing near white out conditions possible. High travel impacts in northern IL are likely. In addition, with temps plummeting, a flash freeze is possible in central/northern IL which may make roads slick Thursday night.
Friday: Gusty winds will continue into Friday causing blowing snow to be an issue. Travel impacts are possible. In addition, temps will be much colder Friday with below zero temps in northern IL Friday night and below zero wind chills across central/northern IL at night.
Saturday: Another snow opportunity is possible across IL. Central/southern parts could see some of this too. Given temps will be quite cold, snow ratios will be pretty high. This means it won't take much precipitation to lead to accumulating snow. Given cold temps, some gusty winds at times and very fluffy snow; travel impacts are likely to develop wherever the snow falls. It's too early to really go into detail. Saturday night we'll see temps below zero across central IL and wind chills of 0 to -30.
Sunday: Dangerous cold likely. Wind chills of -5 to -30 are likely, coldest north. Outdoor activities are discouraged.
Early next week: Temps will remain cold for much of next week with below zero temps at night for several days possible in northern IL. Wind chills of 0 to -25 are possible during the week, coldest at night.

A large winter storm will move in tomorrow morning across central Illinois and northern Illinois in the afternoon/evening.
We expect about 1/10 to 1/4" ice from I-74 south to I-72, but areas around I-72 will likely warm above freezing by early afternoon. This ice plus strong gusty winds may lead to local power outages and possible limb damage.
Areas north of I-74 we expect significant accumulations of 4-10". Snow will move in across this region during the afternoon with snow likely by the evening commute. Expect a rough commute home along a Macomb-Bloomington line and north.
In addition to the snow/ice, strong gusty winds of 30-40MPH may lead to some blowing snow and tree damage in the ice zones.
Snow/ice will continue into the overnight Monday with all snow likely by Tuesday morning across north central/northern IL.
The gradient is very tight on the southern part of the snow region, so even a tiny wobble south can give areas like I-74 a but more snow.
We'll have a morning update, so please check in as we'll adjust our map if needed.

A winter storm will bring moderate to heavy snow and ice to parts of central Illinois Monday into Tuesday morning. Freezing rain will spread into areas along and north of I-70 late Sunday night through Monday morning, likely resulting in slippery travel for the Monday morning commute. A band of snow is then expected to develop Monday morning through Monday night, bringing heavy snowfall to portions of central into northern Illinois. Impacts to the Monday morning and evening commutes are possible, as well as Tuesday morning. It is important to note that small shifts in the snow and ice accumulation areas may result in significant changes in snow and ice amounts for some locations. Monitor the latest forecast for updates and prepare now for potential impacts! Locations south of I-70 will see mostly rain during this event. A winter storm watch is in effect for portions of west central Illinois.
