Missouri Coalition Against Domestic and Sexual Violence

In honor Black History Month, we are celebrating the legacy of Black icons of the domestic and sexual violence movement. Today, we are honoring Recy Taylor. In 1944, Taylor bravely sought justice and accountability after she was raped by a group of white men. With the aid of Rosa Parks, Taylor’s story received national attention. Taylor faced her home being firebombed in response to her pursuing legal action against her assaulters. Although Taylor did not receive justice through the court system, her fierce advocacy was one of the early catalysts for the Civil Rights Movement.
