Hemanjani Gonchigar, MD, is passionate about helping patients and their families find effective means of managing, living with, and improving the symptoms of a vast range of mental health disorders. She founded Capital Area Psychiatric Services (CAPS) in Vienna, Virginia, to improve the quality of life of adults and adolescents who suffer from short-term and long-term mental health challenges by integrating psychodynamic and behavioral interventions with effective psychopharmacological agents, as needed.
Dr. Gonchigar earned her Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery at Rangaraya Medical College in Kakinada, Andhra Pradesh, India, and then completed her residency in psychiatry at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, Tennessee. She went on to a fellowship in patient psychiatry at Harvard University’s Faulkner Hospital, and completed another fellowship in child and adolescent psychiatry at Boston University Medical Center, both in Boston, Massachusetts. She’s board-certified by the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology.
A keen and attentive listener whom her patients describe as kind and caring, Dr. Gonchigar has more than 20 years of clinical experience in psychiatry. She takes the time to learn about each individual who comes to CAPS and custom-designs a treatment plan that meets all of their needs. She also works with area schools and provides counseling and education to patients and their families.
