The number one way Oak Wilt is spread from tree to tree is through the Sap Beetle feeding on open wounds or fresh cuts. During the winter these Beetles are not active, nor is the tree, which is why we prune our oaks and elms at this time (Nov-March). If you have an Oak or Elm please do not prune it during the active season or you may end up having to remove it. Visit our website for more info on Oak Wilt and other PHC services.

We have talked about this before but there is a lot of value to understanding proper pruning techniques and what types there are. Also, a reminder that winter is the only time Oaks and Elms should be pruned, but honestly, any tree will benefit having it done in the winter over the summer season.
If you have recently planted any trees in the last 5 years and have never had it pruned you need to do so ASAP. A small cut now will save you from a large cut later. Attention Hunters: DNR is warning all deer hunters to not use Ash Trees for their stands this year or ever unless you know it has been treated for EAB.
As we have warned for the last few years now, if you or anyone you know has an Ash Tree in Dane County and haven’t treated it yet for EAB chances are it’s too late. This also goes for public properties, lots of towns/cities ignored the warnings of EAB and failed to act fast enough with treatments and are now having to do removals.
You may have noticed a large amount of dead ash trees this year and it’s only going to get worse before it gets better. If you’re doing treatments, then you’re safe and be sure to keep them going.
