Capital Manor resident and artist wins first place for her creative photography! Since the pandemic, Keizer Art Association (KAA) has transitioned their monthly exhibits for local artists, to a virtual space. This past August, KAA held a virtual exhibit called A Celebration of Flowers. Suzie's entry “Good Morning Sunshine” won 1st place in the Photography Division. Suzie took this image of David and Ann Lau’s (also residents) dahlias in the Capital Manor Community Garden late summer 2019. At the end of the show, all the winners from the exhibit went on display in the Keizer Civic Center for the month of September. Congratulations Suzie!

A Pandemic Success Story On March 16th, the CM resident Education Committee, under the leadership of Bill Monical, was set to debut their new program series “Music Potpourri”. It was modeled after a program idea committee member Grant Hagestedt had developed during his time with ICL at Willamette University. The focus was to give resident hosts the opportunity to share their favorite musical memory, performance, artist, or piece with a live audience through commentary and samples of music. Unfortunately, the COVID Pandemic shut down the auditorium on March 13th before the first Music Potpourri program ever took the stage. It would have been easy at that point to just put the series on a shelf for later, but the creative minds of the Education Committee did not give up! Instead, they found a way to produce a video version. While respecting the social distancing guidelines, individual resident hosts were taped in their apartments using Zoom technology set up by the tech guru of the committee, Doug Cross, who then used his expertise to put it all together in a format that could be shown on our CCTV station. So far 12 residents and one staff member have made a Music Potpourri program on a wonderful variety of topics ranging from classical to pop music as well as the music of the trumpet, organ, guitar and autoharp plus band music in many forms – Concert Band, Big Band, comedy bands and coming this next week – Mariachi Bands. The end result - not only have residents been treated to the opportunity to learn more about a wide selection of music, they have also had the chance to get to know some of their fellow residents just a little bit better…even during a pandemic. Capital Manor has two of its own CCTV channels. Throughout the pandemic, the Community Life Team has been programming movies, concerts, educational programs, exercise videos, and vespers services. One of the newest programs is called Music Potpourri. Residents present a short video presentation via zoom sharing their favorite musical piece or performance. Everybody’s tastes in music are so varied, that the mixture of styles is fun, educational, and interesting! Coming soon, watch for the story behind the Music Potpourri program.
The leadership of the Canby community that was scheduled to take shelter at Capital Manor has determined for now it is safe to stay in Canby. They are ready should they have to leave, but at this time they are not evacuating. Capital Manor remains prepared to welcome them should the situation change. We are relieved to hear that their community is safe at this time.
Today, Capital Manor will welcome 12 residents from a senior living community in Canby, Oregon who had to evacuate. These residents are bringing their own team to continue to provide care for them during their stay. We will do our very best to provide comfort to our new friends. Thoughts of hope and healing go out to everyone in Oregon effected by the fires.

November: A Month for Gratitude! "Thankful! Yes, I am! So thankful I got moved to Capital Manor just before the covid19 shut down occurred. So thankful I got to bring my little 8 pound wonder dog with me to Capital Manor. So thankful for the friendly, loving, smiling, helpful staff at the manor. So thankful for all my new neighbors who are always friendly but, like me, waiting for the time we can party as an entire group. I am so thankful for my new living style that provides help when needed, daily meals, security. I am thankful." ~Gerry, resident
For 20 years, Capital Manor has hosted a Fall Arts & Crafts Show & Sale in our Auditorium. It has been a wonderful way to celebrate the artistic talents of the Manor community AND a great opportunity to shop for one-of-kind original items that can make perfect gifts for family and friends. This year the protocols for Covid 19 did not allow us to have our large group event but all was not lost. Thanks to the creative talents of residents Doug and Suzie Cross – Capital Manor produced its first Arts & Crafts Sale catalogue! It features the work of individual residents as well as the Ceramics and Fiber Arts Studios. We have a great section that includes wood working, paintings, scratch art, knitting, crocheting, tatting, quilting, fabric crafts, calendars, hand-crafted cards, doorstop cats, stained glass, hand-made jewelry, photography and ceramic pieces. The sale opened on Oct. 30th with the delivery of hundreds of catalogues all across our campus. In this picture you can see the first weekend’s orders that came in and are waiting to be delivered by staff.
Capital Manor residents are incredible! We are a community of active and engaged older adults who make things happen. Residents coordinated putting together a fun line dance class by streaming an online instructor into the auditorium to get everyone kicking up their heals and moving to the music! November: A Month for Gratitude! This month, we are asking residents to share a few words describing what they are grateful for. "I’m grateful for a warm place to live among friendly, helpful people plus that the Lord has given me another day to try and be of some help to others. Blessings to one and all." ~Russ
A Spirit of Giving: It has become a holiday tradition at Capital Manor for resident volunteers in the Fiber Arts Studio and the Woodshop to make gifts for the children in the Head Start programs in Salem-Keizer. Each year, the Woodshop has made hundreds of toy trucks and cars for children across the Salem-Keizer area, while the Fiber Arts volunteers hosted a holiday party in December for the 40 Head Start children in the West Salem location. At the party, Santa delivered a wooden toy and a fiber arts gift to each child. This year, as the pandemic quarantine set in, no one knew how long it would last, but the Capital Manor Christmas elves made their gifts anyway. And when it became apparent that there could be no Holiday Party with the children, a way was found with the help of the Head Start staff to send the gifts to the children. Thanks to the 7 volunteers in the Woodshop, 378 wooden trucks/cars were sent out including 40 race cars to the West Salem Head Start children, which were paired with 40 pocket pillows made by the 9 volunteers in Fiber Arts and filled with stickers, crayons and paper. And the reward ?...Some priceless pictures from parents of children joyfully hugging their new toys!
This year Capital Manor participated in The Salem Dream Center—Dream Tree. The center sent us a message today. "A huge thank you to both staff and residents for contributing to the Salem Dream Center Dream Tree. Together, we were able to purchase 475 gifts for children in our community who are part of the Dream Center program. YOU helped make a child’s Christmas wish come true this year! Craig and Renee Oviatt, the Executive Directors of the Salem Dream Center said, “we are counting our blessings—because of Capital Manor, the Dream Tree was successful this year during the pandemic and we are forever grateful.” These gifts went to children right here in West Salem. Thanks to everyone who gave to this worthwhile cause.
Special Letters for our Veterans! Grace, a granddaughter of Capital Manor residents, is a teacher in the Salem-Keizer online EDGE (Enhanced Digital & Guided Education) program. She has a blended class of 3rd and 4th graders (8-10 years old) who are all Spanish speakers and are in the English Language Learning program. Grace wanted to give them an opportunity to feel more connected to their community so had them write letters to the Manor’s veterans. With the challenges of on-line remote teaching, the letters did not get to us by Veteran Day but they have now arrived and have been posted outside the Community Life office where veterans have been invited to pick up a letter or two to read. Veterans can also write back and answer some of the students’ questions so that the children will have the opportunity to learn a little more about our community. A wonderful example of generations interacting together.
The Activity Committee brought out special treats for all staff today: coffee, cocoa, and cinnamon rolls from Urban Grange. We dressed in our festive best with the plans to carol through the campus. The rains didn't cease so we stayed indoors and sang through the halls, much to the resident's delight. Many joined in and sang along with us.
Our Environmental Services Team celebrated yesterday with Secret Santa gifts, yummy treats and warm hearts. This team has stepped up in an incredible way this past year to clean and sanitize our community in the face of the pandemic. We cannot thank them enough. Happy Holidays, all!
