A big thank you to the Maryland Department of Juvenile Services for including our residents in your writing campaign. It's always nice to be thought of. 🥰 Maryland Department of Juvenile Services October 15 at 7:59 PM · For DJS’ Day to Serve initiative, the Central Region staff, their families, and youth created a stellar letter writing campaign to provide encouraging words, pictures, and more to seniors residing in facilities throughout the heart of the state. In Carroll County, Case Management Program Supervisor Brian Gass delivered 10 letters and a painting to residents at Carroll Lutheran Village in Westminster. From DJS’ Howard County office, Case Manager Sean Randall and Assistant Regional Director Tracy Whitaker presented 25 letters and a poster to the Lorien Health Center in Columbia. In Baltimore County, DJS’ Catonsville office collected dozens of colorful cards and letters from staff and clients, and the Essex office donated a basket of letters. Combined, there were a total of 91 cards and letters, delivered to Genesis Franklin Woods by Singleton Golden, Assistant Regional Director of the Central Region. Through the CHAMPS program, youth from all of DJS' facilities created a large poster, two epoxy art pieces, eight paintings, and 30 handmade cards. DJS’ Director of Recreational Programming Lisa LaPrade delivered the items to the Franklin Woods Center. Overall, the CHAMPS program collected 80 cards, 23 paintings, and 18 pieces of art, distributed to nursing facilities in the Central, Southern, and Eastern Shore regions. #daytoserve

To watch a teenager study is an interesting observation. Knowing that all generalizations can be misleading, it is amazing to observe the amount of stimulus a young person can withstand. During this time of “virtual school”, a student text friends, Snapchat and balance Instagram posts and Twitter, while simultaneously listening to a lecture from a teacher. At least that is the hope. Surely some of the social media may be a distraction, the reality is that many young people can deal with added stimulus easier than older people. There is much happening in our world today. There is much about which to be stimulated—especially in our very own country. It is common to react to these situations with fear, anxiety, confusion, anger or denial. Many want to rally and fight for change and reform, while others are exhausted and defeated and hopeless. Some are afraid and confused, while others are angry. We wonder, “Where is God in all of this chaos of our country, of our world?” In the story from Exodus, chapter 3, imagine the scene as Moses passed by a bush that was burning but was not “burning up”. Instead of passing by, he turned and looked. It was then, when he looked, that God entered the bush and spoke to Moses. What was initially a burning bush became a holy place of worship (“You are standing on holy ground”, vs. 5) God entered the chaos and made it holy. Might God enter the chaos of our world today and make it holy if we, like Moses, turn and look for God? And where we do not see the presence of God, let us take up our baptismal call to “let our light so shine before others.” Through the Holy Spirit, we have a Christ light to shine in this world!

My grandson is proud to have finally learned his name. He now knows his whole name, all three of them! Telling us his name is a perfect accompaniment to also telling us how old he is. He knows that he loves to play with trains, and he loves to play outside, and he has no fear of getting dirty! Charlie is beginning to become an individual little urchin—a unique being—with a name to go along with it. I have been reflecting a lot on individualism this past week, especially since the tragic riots which broke out at the Capitol on Wednesday. I have glanced at some of the images of the individuals who stormed the Senate lobby. Some seem to be wearing costumes in order to stand out. Others wore military gear, as if going into battle. Some people looked like our neighbors, even while filming themselves live on Facebook in order to record the action. But each of them seem to be so full of emotion and adrenaline and their own selfish desires that they were not aware of the drastic implications of their actions. I would say the same was true of the destructive looters over the summer. They were not focused on the issue of racialized violence. They were focused on free merchandise. We are left in a place of sadness and loss and despair in our country. Not only because of COVID, but because of this disease of individualism. Yes, we have all been created as unique, beloved children of God. However, we have been created for the sake, not of ourselves, but for the sake of Christ and service in the name of Christ. In this text from Galatians, St. Paul reminds us that our identity is not connected to our religion or our gender or our social status. Our identity is solely in who we are as forgiven and redeemed in Jesus Christ. My prayer is for God to rain humility upon this county. Maybe it needs to rain for forty days and flood the ground as in the days of Noah. I realize this is only my idea and thankfully God is much wiser. Nevertheless, let us all spend some time on our knees pouring out ourselves and making more room for Christ in us. #Devotional
