During the second week of October, the US celebrates Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder (OCD) Awareness Week. OCD affects about 3 million US adults and approximately 500,000 kids and teenagers. There’s no cure for OCD, but symptoms can be managed with cognitive-behavioral therapies and medication. Some common obsessions are contamination fears, excessive worries about harm, and excessive religious and/or moral doubt. It’s important to remember that OCD symptoms can occur in people of all ages, but most cases are not promptly or properly diagnosed resulting in a lag between the onset of symptoms and access to effective treatment.
Since 1988, National Coming Out Day has been celebrated annually on October 11 by members of the LGBTQ+ and heterosexual allies. The day was established to honor the anniversary of the 1987 Washington March for Lesbian and Gay Rights. Through the years, the goal of National Coming Out Day remains the same: to have people recognize that individuals they already know and respect may happen to be gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender. Events such as discussions, shows, and workshops are held during the day to strengthen the community. Highlighting that LGBTQ+ people are everywhere is key in reducing stigmas, fears, and stereotypes that are detrimental to so many people.
On October 4, Mental Illness Awareness Week begins. The event happens during the first full week of October since 1990 and started as a Congress effort to educate and increase awareness about mental illness. This month should remind us to be aware of the mental health issues affecting us and our loved ones so we can help one another heal.
