One of the latest evolutions in tow truck technology is the integrated lift, which is also known as a self loading wrecker. This is basically a wheel lift system that can be controlled from inside the truck using hydraulic power to lift the vehicle.
Did you know that, during the first towing occurrence, it took mechanic Ernest Holmes eight hours and six men to retrieve a Model-T from a creek bed?
Tire or wheel lift towing devices avoid damaging the vehicle being towed because they only touch the tires. Brackets are fitted in front of and behind the drive wheels of the vehicle and then secured in place with steel pins before the tow truck mechanism lifts the vehicle.
The first towing device was patented in 1918 by Ernest Holmes. Filed as a Hoisting Apparatus for Automobiles, the patent detailed the design and configuration of the derrick (crane), bracing and stabilizers used to lift and safely tow a motor vehicle.
While waiting for a tow truck, it’s recommended that you use caution if you are approached by other motorists. Lock your doors, stay in the car, and crack the window an inch or so to talk to anyone who stops.
