Crazy 😜 how much work it is to do my job!!! Here I am dressed coming in to see my patients ➡️putting on surgery center scrubs and respirator mask😷 for endoscopes, ➡️and then changing back into my N95 and regular scrubs for the office.
The respirators are very difficult to communicate in so I started performing some charades when I was calling out the specimens and diagnosis for the procedure since they couldn’t hear me in my respirator mask😷 .
This is my daily routine now when I perform surgeries, not to mention wiping 🧻 down surfaces with disinfectant wipes. Not only as a surgeon 👩⚕️ am I concentrating on the patient’s care but I have to do so many steps to take care of them! I guess one ☝️ good thing is I have a perfect Halloween 🎃 costume this year!!!

This is a video of me docking the surgical robot 🤖 to the patient. We dock the robot to the ports which are entry ways for instruments to enter the abdomen so I can operate and control them at the surgical console.
When you think 🤔 of “docking” immediately a space ship 🚀 comes to mind in outer space 🪐 not necessarily for doing an operation. However this is the lingo we use in the operating room.
Depending on the target 🎯 organ we are operating on the robot will adjust its positioning to promote the best way to allow all the instruments to move well inside the abdomen. The abdominal wall is kept elevated by using a constant flow of CO2 gas.

The surgical robot is completely controlled by my fingers at the surgical console.
It may look 👀 impressive with its massive arms but it also has a lot of fail safes to protect the patient.
The visualization in the console is high definition 3D and the instrument tips are only centimeters in length. They may look huge on the screen 📺 but are very small in real life. These small instrument tips can do massive detailed operations when controlled correctly and precisely by the operator.

This is a look 👀 at a deflated portion of the stomach I remove after a sleeve gastrectomy surgery. I place it in a bag and pull it out through a 12 mm incision. If you try to fill this portion of the stomach with saline it would carry about a liter!
It’s amazing that by removing this part of the stomach grhelin drops in the bloodstream and helps to decrease your hunger and helps to reset your set point!!!
I perform this surgery robotically and it takes about 60-90 mins. The mortality rate from this operation is 0.08% which is less than removing one’s gallbladder or removing one’s appendix. It’s amazing how this surgery with such a low mortality rate can actually prolong one’s life!!!

This weather was ok in Chicago where I lived during medical school 🏫 for 4 years because the city 🌃 was prepared for it. We had snow plows for the streets to make it safe to drive as well as salting the sidewalks and streets. Unfortunately Texas isn’t prepared for this kind of weather and it is so apparent.
The question is - what is the likelihood this cold weather will happen again so that we can all be prepared !?!
