We used metal to cover up some broken concrete on the side. We also used a metal plate so the door wouldn’t be so large and heavy. The stairs pretty much went straight down so there was no worry about anybody hitting their head on the plate as they walked down.
If your RN cellar door is stuck or locking from the inside, then consider having it replaced with one of our doors. The latching device is controlled from the inside and outside so you can’t lock yourself out.

There is a Liftbeam door assist attached to these as well. It makes the door virtually weightless. Also, the white caulking is clear after it dries. These two pictures are each at a different location but the door is the same size.
We made the trip out to Broken Arrow today. It fit and worked out perfectly.
