It is very cold outside. Hello winter! You may be tempted to heat those cold feet. Everyone, especially those with diabetes, must take caution in heating your feet to prevent burns.
Some diabetics can’t feel pain or other stimuli in their lower extremities. This condition is called peripheral neuropathy. Peripheral neuropathy can also happen to people without diabetes.
Burns can occur to the feet from getting them too hot without noticing. It can happen without being aware if you have peripheral neuropathy. This can happen in a number of ways. Some of which include using a space heater, sitting beside an open fire, or showering in water that’s too hot. Instead of heating your feet with these external sources, try using wool socks, moisture wicking socks, and/or house shoes.
Diabetes = don’t heat your feet!
