Scenes from our Oktoberfest concert earlier this week! Residents enjoyed a lively performance by Die Musikmeisters Band that included everything from traditional German polka to cowbells and even an alphorn!
Last week, Honor Flight Chicago was on-site to tape interviews with eight veterans living at Chestnut Square as part of their Operation Education program! In addition to honoring senior war heroes, Honor Flight Chicago inspires future generations by sharing the stories of our veterans. Honor Flight Chicago hopes to have these videos ready to share in November for Veterans Day, and we look forward to sharing them at that time! Pictured: Gladys K. holds her official Navy portrait! Gladys, who recently celebrated her 100th birthday, served as a nurse in the Navy during World War II. In 2009, Gladys and her husband Hank (Army Air Corp) participated in the Honor Flight program themselves! Pictured: Don K. was an Army staff sergeant and cook during the Korean War and his Army Recipes book never left his side during his service! Chestnut Square residents James C., Paul H., Bill L., Elliott R., Bob W., and Bill Z. were also interviewed by Honor Flight Chicago.
As we age, staying active is more important than ever. Chair yoga is an excellent way for older adults to get moving and safely improve their health. It not only has the benefits of regular yoga — such as helping with stress, pain, and fatigue — but chair yoga can also help with joint lubrication and balance. For more senior-friendly yoga tips, including a five-minute chair yoga exercise, visit our blog: https://www.chestnutsquare.info/senior-friendly-yoga-tips-all-from-the-comfort-of-your-chair #WellnessWednesday #seniorhealth #seniorliving #seniorwellness CHESTNUTSQUARE.INFO Senior Friendly Yoga Tips, All from the Comfort of Your Chair

Chestnut Square resident Marge N. proudly displays her most prized possession: a special gift that showcases all her children and grandchildren! Before raising her large family, Marge earned a degree in nutrition and worked as a dietician at Marshall Field’s. Tuesday’s Flu Shot Program was a tremendous success with over 100 residents getting vaccinated throughout the day in our spacious Great Room! The event was organized and coordinated by Sharon Oidem, Megan Green, and our wonderful staff at Partners in Healthcare and Partners in Home Healthcare! We would also like to thank the Jewel-Osco pharmacy team for being on-site to administer the shots. Seasonal flu vaccination is especially important for people 65 years and older because they are at a higher risk of developing serious complications from the flu virus. Have you gotten your flu shot yet?
Are you getting enough restorative sleep? A good night's rest is more important than you may realize! Besides the obvious influence on a person’s quality of life, inadequate sleep can also lead to serious health conditions. Insomnia is more common for seniors and the consequences of chronic sleep loss can include memory loss, mood changes, weakened immunity, diabetes, high blood pressure, weight gain, fatigue, heart disease, and poor balance. Fortunately, there are steps you can take to restore restful sleep. Life is a lot simpler now and our new apartment has a private patio next to the gazebo courtyard so we’re outside all the time! Because of COVID-19, there’s no escaping that things will be quite different for a while. But that’s going to be the case wherever you are. What’s important is knowing that we found a really nice community that’s looking out for us no matter what." - Murray and Kathy R.
Travel plans may still be on hold, but that hasn’t stopped Chestnut Square residents from exploring our amazing planet! Residents loved this week's travelogue film 'Exploring Micronesia' which featured some stunning deep ocean footage of the region's beautiful geography, including some famous shipwrecks. Next stop, Sicily!

When selecting a retirement community, seniors must weigh many different factors such as services, amenities, levels of care, and floor plan styles. Equally as important, but not discussed quite as often, is the vital role of location. Since opening in 2003, Chestnut Square has been one of the North Shore’s most popular destinations for independent senior living in part because of its unmatched location in the heart of The Glen. As we navigate our way through these unprecedented times, it is important to find healthy ways to reduce stress. While meditation has proven to be a significant tool to reduce stress and increase a person's sense of well-being, lots of people have a hazy or inaccurate picture of what meditation is. One of the most common misconceptions—and deterrence—is the idea that one must quiet their mind to experience the benefits of meditation. Organized entirely by Chestnut Square residents, Men's Club is a new and fun opportunity for our male residents to meet each other, engage in lively discussion, learn from guest speakers, and share stories. During their first meeting, the group had a great time introducing themselves, sharing their unique backgrounds, and brainstorming ideas for upcoming meetings!
We supplied the paint, rocks, and sample templates, and then let our residents' creative instincts take over! We are so impressed by their painted rock creations, including Alice R.’s picture stands!

Esther Behnke’s stunning collection of hand-made quilts are now on display at Chestnut Square! One of our most recent move-ins, Esther was the business manager at the Northbrook Public Library for 28 years and didn't discover her passion for sewing and quilting until retiring. “Moving to Chestnut Square this December was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. I feel safe and part of a community that cares about my health and happiness. The staff goes out of their way to make you feel like family...and their response during the pandemic has been wonderful. I also liked that every floor plan has a full kitchen and washer/dryer...I have everything I could need and I’ve even converted my spare bedroom into an official sewing room!”
