I’m super proud of our cute little tree! Confession: since taking ownership of Chevy Chase Florist in 2017, I have not put up a Christmas tree in our own home 😬. The weekends before and immediately following Thanksgiving, our team switches gears into holiday decor mode for our wonderful clients, installing over a dozen🎄in the span of a week. It’s fun spreading holiday cheer, but I’ll admit that after all that hustle (and a handsy toddler) I’d been a bit unmotivated to do our own. It has taken me a bit to figure out how to address last week’s tragedy. As a first generation AAPI, it has been emotionally draining as it is, and I’ve gone back and forth if/what to post. What’s appropriate as a business owner? What’s appropriate as a member of the AAPI community?
A fellow AAPI business owner (you know who you are 😘) said to me, “Isn’t it incredible how many accommodations we make on a daily basis, without even giving it much thought, just to ‘lay low’?!?”. It hit me right in the feels. I’m now realizing that when it comes to injustice, there’s no longer an excuse to stay silent and keep under the radar.
It’s time to put the model minority myth to bed.
