Congratulations to Mackenzie Wiese who was our August DAISY award winner.
Here is her winning nomination:
“I came in with an individual I work with who has autism and can’t see. Mackenzie did amazing. She was so patient with us and so incredibly kind when we were very frazzled and exhausted. She was patient with us through paperwork issues, behavioral issues, health problems, etc. He was so grateful for her help, he called her his friend.
When all was said and done, she took us to an elevator to let him ride on it (one of his favorite things). She even rode with us on it, which made his day much better. She did such an amazing job as a nurse and even better as a human.
We don’t always get lucky in having people understand us and help when we are caring for an individual with special needs, sometimes people can be rude and less than helpful. Mackenzie though, was an absolute rock star. She deserves this award and so much more.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart for the kindness and patience that you showed. And he thanks you too. He says that he wants to feel better to tell his “nurse friend Mackenzie”. Again, thank you so much. Absolutely outstanding nurse.”

Congratulations to our newest DAISY award winner Britney Davis from our NICU
Here is her winning nomination:
"When we arrived in the NICU we were very scared because we didn’t know what was wrong with our baby other than she was having trouble breathing and wouldn’t eat.
Britney was our nurse and she went above and beyond. She did oral cares for our baby and this was really awesome because our baby could not have anything by mouth. She also stayed with us when we were unsure of what was happening. She explained things on a level that we understood.
Not only did she care for our baby but she made sure that we as parents were well taken care of. She also was not afraid to be hands on in breast feeding troubles. She told me things to try to help me, and she also showed me exactly what to do.
There was a time she had to leave the floor and help with a c-section. She still made sure that we were taken care of. We had another nurse for that time and she came in exactly when it was time to feed. Overall I was so impressed with how she cared for us in this scary time."
Congratulations to our very own, Barb Nickel who was nominated as a March of Dimes Nurse of the Year in the Advanced Practice category!

Here is an excerpt of the nomination letter written about the City of Grand Island Fire Department on their Emergency Nurses Association award:
“The Grand Island Fire Department (GIFD) does a phenomenal job of assisting with transport of critical patients in Hall County to CHI Health St. Francis. They work continuously to ensure patient care and safe transport. The ED nurses at CHI Health St. Francis and GIFD worked collaboratively in the spring with the advent of COVID 19 to ensure that patients were transported safely and efficiently while also communicating with the ED to ensure everyone in the emergency room was prepared appropriately for safe care. They joined in our efforts to reduce the spread of COVID 19.
Throughout the past year, they have collaborated with our nurses to assure that all staff are trained and ready in various disaster scenarios which would potentially cause an influx of patients.
GIFD is a constant force in the Grand Island community from transporting critical patients to assisting with Stop the Bleed classes. They are always willing to volunteer and assist with any community function so the public is aware of the 911 services they provide. They have been present and assisted the ED department with their teddy bear clinics to expose and educate young children on emergency medical care.”
We are so thankful for the GIFD for all they do for our patients and community!

Creighton Nursing begins new era at St. Francis
Today was an exciting day for Creighton Nursing Program and CHI Health St. Francis.
The Creighton University College of Nursing officially moved its central Nebraska campus to the seventh floor of CHI Health St. Francis in Grand Island today.
The new space will welcome its first cohort of nursing students this January.
The newly configured space, occupying a section of the seventh floor in the hospital’s patient tower, features classrooms, simulation space, seating areas, study carrels, a student lounge, receptionist area and office spaces. Previously designated as overflow space for hospitalized patients, the seventh floor was prepared, but never needed during the pandemic.
The new location at St. Francis will offer Creighton nursing students a top-level clinical experience and the potential of working in the area’s only cancer center. CHI Health will also offer scholarships and guaranteed job placements to several students each year.
“St. Francis is a Magnet designated hospital which is awarded by the American Nurses’ Credentialing Center and is considered the gold standard for nursing excellence. Our nurses are empowered to make decisions about the care they provide, utilizing evidence-based practices that produce superior patient outcomes,” said Beth Bartlett, vice president for Patient Care Services, at St. Francis. “This academic partnership is just one more piece in providing a positive learning environment for nursing students.”
“Relocating our central Nebraska campus to the Grand Island community allows Creighton University to highlight our academic-clinical partnership with CHI Health and contribute to alleviating the nursing shortage in Nebraska,” said Julie Manz, PhD, RN, assistant dean at the college. “We look forward to establishing new relationships in the Grand Island community to best serve the health needs of the people through health promotion, disease prevention, health education and care management.”
The College of Nursing graduated more than 900 students from the campus at Mary Lanning Healthcare in Hastings before the move beginning in October. The school’s accelerated Bachelor of Science in Nursing program is one of the nation’s most successful and longest running. It began in 1975 on Creighton’s Omaha campus and later expanded to Hastings in 1986.
We are beyond excited to begin this new chapter with Creighton nursing students!

Comments from staff when asked why they stepped up to help:
“As a NICU nurse, I haven’t dealt with Covid first hand as much as many of my fellow nurses have. By giving my time on a day off to give the Covid vaccine, I feel I am doing my part to help fight this pandemic. The amount of joy and excitement that fills the room and the smiles on everyone’s face, makes this experience extremely rewarding.”
