About

In 2009, Sharon Content founded Children of Promise, NYC (CPNYC) after growing increasingly concerned about the lack of support offered to young people who experience parental incarceration.

CPNYC is the first and only after-school program and summer day camp specifically designed to meet the needs, interests and concerns of children left behind by a parent serving time in prison. Since its inception, we have provided services to over 1,000 children and their families. The agency has developed broad collaborative relationships and community partnerships, raised over $5M dollars in government and philanthropic funding and established it's own innovative and holistic model to support children of incarcerated parents in leading healthy and productive lives.

We love this! Thank you Tevin, for #KeepingThePromise, and way to go Shamell (Daqwuan)! Tevin Wallace October 29 at 6:22 PM · Met Shamell (Daqwuan) 11 years at Children of Promise, NYC. He always got into trouble, struggled with family drama, etc.......... But he had alot of potential in him. Over the years we grew a bond and I ADOPTED that big brother role in his life. Took him under my wing. It wasn't easy. Never had a lil brother so my cristism may have been hard. He helped me grow as well. Two years ago he told me he'll take his big brother out to eat, and that he'll make me proud one day. This week he came through on that PROMISE. He took his big brother out to eat for my BDAY. Told me get WHATEVER.$92 bill 😮🙌🏿. I'm proud of him. He's doing amazing in school. Never been locked up, College bound, Straight A's, Working, list goes on. I say this to encourage people take a risk. Make a difference in the next generation, the results will surprise you. ❤❤❤❤🥺

As we look towards a new year, we envision a society that values the purpose of every child impacted by mass incarceration. A society where decision-makers will not so readily incarcerate Black and Brown men and women—separating them from their children and destroying families. We seek a society that has concern for the children that are left behind. Our response at CPNYC is a new campaign, Life Outside Bars: Stand for Our Children. #LifeOutsideBars is for children impacted by mass incarceration throughout New York City--specifically in Brooklyn and the Bronx. For them, this has been traumatic and devastating for decades. As demonstrated by the stories we are sharing with you, families most often do not need to experience incarceration. There are alternatives and the cycle could end. Your generous support will provide the resources we need to continue to be there for children in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Read more about Life Outside Bars and make a donation to #StandForOurChildren. https://bit.ly/LOBCPNYC MAILCHI.MP Stand for Our Children: Support Life Outside Bars

I don’t think society understands the impact the virus has created,” said Sharon Content, the founder and president of Children of Promise, a nonprofit that offers support and mentoring to children of incarcerated parents. “Some children don’t have food, or Wi-Fi, or a parent telling them to put on a winter coat.” In the meantime, she continued, “there’s no visitation in the prisons, there are limitations with the phones because more prisoners are on them, and the child is worried that their parent is sick because the Covid rate is so high in prisons.” https://www.nytimes.com/2021/01/21/nyregion/mentors-new-york.html NYTIMES.COM ‘I Know I’m Not Alone’: The Importance of Mentors Right Now

Morgan-Mullane is the vice president of mental health services at Children of Promise, NYC. About 12 years ago, the organization’s founder, Sharon Content, created a first-of-its kind program that weaves mental health care into after-school activities for children of incarcerated parents between the ages of 6 and 13. More than 60 percent of the children in Children of Promise witnessed their parents’ arrests. Kids in the program come to Children of Promise, NYC sites in Brooklyn or the Bronx, where they start with a meal, then move to circle time, where they can discuss their feelings with others in their age group. Then, they can get help with their schoolwork, engage in a recreational activity like volleyball and participate in a therapeutic group session, which could be an art class. Each counselor leading those activities is trained on how to approach a child experiencing a variety of emotions, including frustration or sadness. The organization’s clinicians are on-site and speak to kids individually while the activities are ongoing. https://www.pbs.org/newshour/nation/why-kids-need-special-support-when-a-parent-is-locked-up PBS.ORG Why kids need special support when a parent is locked up
