National GERD Awareness Week (Nov. 22-28 this year) comes just in time for Thanksgiving – when many Americans may experience heartburn associated with overeating. However, if heartburn occurs more frequently, or is associated with symptoms other than heartburn, it may be gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD), a lifelong disease that affects up to one in five adults in the United States.
GERD is caused by a weak valve that allows acid, bile and stomach contents to flow back from the stomach into the esophagus, creating pain (heartburn) and potentially causing damage to the lining of the esophagus. Heartburn is the most common symptom, but not the only one. Consult your physician if you are experience GERD symptoms and get information and support regarding the condition. Memorial Medical Center begins inoculating staff against COVID-19
Big news today! Healthcare workers, and fire and EMS personnel received their first dose of the Pfizer COVID-19 vaccine at Memorial Medical Center. In this video, hear from them about why they got vaccinated and why it's still vitally important to wear a mask, practice social distancing and maintain good hand hygiene moving forward.
This first wave of vaccine is only being distributed to frontline workers, per CDC and state guidelines. We encourage everyone in our community to get vaccinated once the vaccine is more widely available, hopefully in the coming months.

Q: Who is currently eligible for the COVID-19 vaccine? When will it be available to the general public?
A: We are in the process of distributing the vaccine in accordance with prioritization guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the federal government and our state health departments. Vaccine administration has begun with our frontline healthcare workers and first responders in the community. As soon as the vaccine becomes more broadly available, we strongly encourage our community to get vaccinated.

January is National Birth Defects Prevention Month. The theme for 2021 is “Best for You. Best for Baby.” We know that not all birth defects can be prevented. But you can increase your chances of having a healthy baby by doing what you can to be your healthiest self both before and during pregnancy. What is best for you is also best for your baby. Birth defects are structural changes that affect one or more parts of the body (e.g. heart, brain, foot). They develop most often during the first three months of pregnancy, when a baby’s organs are forming and can cause problems in overall health, how the body develops and functions. About 1 in 33 babies in the U.S. is born with a birth defect each year, according to the CDC. Common birth defects include congenital heart defects, cleft lip and left palate and spina bifida.
Your genetics, behaviors and social and environmental factors can impact the risk for birth defects, and not all birth defects can be prevented. However, there are things you can do to increase your chance of having a healthy, fully-term pregnancy and baby – and National Birth Defects Prevention Month is the perfect time to learn about them (March of Dimes, https://www.marchofdimes.org/complications/january-is-national-birth-defects-prevention-month.aspx# ) (CDC, https://www.cdc.gov/ncbddd/birthdefects/prevention.html)
5 Tips for Preventing Birth Defects from the CDC:
• Before you get pregnant, try to reach a healthy weight.
• Be sure to take 400 micrograms (mcg) of folic acid every day.
• Book a visit with your healthcare provider before stopping or starting any medicine.
• Become up-to-date with all vaccines, including the flu shot.
• Boost your health by avoiding substances that are harmful during pregnancy.

You can’t see, smell or taste radon, but it could be present at a dangerous level in your home. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in America and claims the lives of about 21,000 Americans each year. In fact, the EPA and the U.S. Surgeon General urge all Americans to protect their health by testing their homes, schools and other buildings for radon.
Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk and testing radon levels in your home can help prevent unnecessary exposure. If a high radon level is detected in your home, you can take steps to fix the problem to protect yourself and your family.

As in every year, there are many reasons to get a flu vaccine. It can reduce your risk of flu and its potentially serious complications. It also can reduce the severity of your illness, even if you still get sick. However, flu vaccination isn’t just about keeping you healthy; it’s also about helping to protect everyone around you who may be vulnerable to becoming very sick from flu.

After almost 25 years of service at MMC, Errol Hull has decided to retire. Errol has served our hospital and our community as a Medical Technologist, providing accurate laboratory test results in the areas of hematology, chemistry, blood bank and microbiology. Errol’s focus while working the graveyard shift was always patient safety. His experience, guidance and kind spirit have been encouraging to many of his coworkers. Errol has been a good scientist but also a friend to many. We thank Errol for his dedication and commitment and wish him the best of luck in his new endeavors!
An important message from MMC Chief Medical Officer Dolores Gomez, MD:
In the coming months, we expect access to the vaccine to begin to open up more for the general public, as vaccine supplies and distribution channels increase and drug manufacturers bring new vaccines forward for authorization. Remember that, at this time, the best way for the public to find out when and where the COVID-19 vaccine will be available to them is to register with the New Mexico Department of Health at cvvaccine.nmhealth.org. Memorial is not currently a vaccination site for the general public.
With enhanced access and additional vaccine options becoming available in our community, you may be thinking…which vaccine is best and do I get to choose?
My advice is simple — get the first COVID-19 vaccine available to you regardless of the manufacturer or dose regimen.
