If the radar is to be believe – as if we didn’t need another “thing” to remember 2020 for – Loudoun County is about to experience its first snow of the season with the potential for the amount to exceed all of last year. While the snow may bring activities we enjoy such as making snow angels, snowball fights and sledding, it can also lead to pulled muscles and injuries from falls. So with that, your Chiron family wanted to remind you / share some tips you have heard a thousand times but are essential to remember in the coming hours / days: Snow Shoveling Tips: • Stretch prior to going outside to warm and loosen muscles; • Shovel early and often. Remember, each shovel full of packed wet snow can weigh close to 10 pounds; • Push, lift and throw. Push the shovel to fill it. Lift with your legs and arms, keeping your back straight and then throw without twisting. Never throw the snow over your shoulder. • Take a break every 10 minutes. Stand straight up and take a moment to stretch. Tips to Reduce Risk of Falling: • Avoid walking on snow banks because the snow may be softer than you expect and thus you will be unable to stand; • Be mindful entering buildings as the floors are usually slippery from melted snow and ice; • Be mindful of your surroundings while walking (black ice, regular ice); • Engage in a regular exercise program to improve strength, balance and coordination. Be safe … have fun … and know your Chiron family is always here for you.

“a thankful heart is not only the greatest virtue but the parent of all the other virtues”  Cicero As we come to the end of a year that has been a grab bag of obstacles, a year where we faced unexpected and unprecedented challenges, it is easy to succumb to fear and focus on the negativity of what occurred. But as we say good bye to 2020, we are choosing to pause and focus on the good we witnessed. Daily, we saw / heard stories of: STRENGTH, PERSEVERANCE, COURAGE and LOVE that inspired and touched us KINDNESS, GENEROSITY and the VERY BEST of HUMANITY as we checked in on neighbors and helped those who were struggling LAUGHTER that filled kitchens and playrooms as recipe and dance experiments were attempted, yielding a variety of results but created lasting memories 2020 reminded us of what and who is important in our lives. It reminded us that good still wins and blessings still abound. And it reminded us to cherish moments and be grateful for the simple things that touch our lives. Today, we encourage you to continue to choose gratitude and infuse the light of hope into the lives of your families, friends, neighbors and strangers around you. Today we encourage you to boldly, bravely chart a new course forward into 2021. And today, we wish you a year filled with health, beautiful sunrises that remind you of the promises of the new day and a million moments that touch your soul and warm your heart.
Saturday was World Introvert Day and it got us thinking … are you an Introvert or an Extrovert? And how would you identify each member of your Chiron Family … Amber? Rich? Adam? Lindsay? Meredith? John? Lisa? Let us know what you think … and we’ll let you know later this week how we “self-identify.”

Young athletes sometimes face injuries that seem unexplainable because they don’t result from physical contact. Actually, these sorts of injuries are perfectly explainable: As puberty takes effect and their bodies begin to mature, their bones grow. In an effort to keep up with this rate of growth, their muscles are pulled and strained, putting them at greater risk for injury when competing. In today’s message, we’ll take a closer look at what happens during this process and what we, as parents and professionals, need to be aware of. To learn more, watch our latest video.
We hope everyone is enjoying the SNOW!! We are open today, February 2, if there is anything you need!

And then it all changed and the past few weeks have been crazy. At least we can look forward to this time next week when it is expected to be sunny and 55. For today … for the safety of you, your family and our family, Chiron will be closed. Stay safe .. stay warm.

Sleep. Quality sleep. We all crave it. We all know the restorative qualities sleep offers. Yet sleep is the one activity on our crazy, filled “to-do” list which is most often neglected. This weekend we all “lose an hour” with the setting ahead of the clocks and with that your Chiron Physical Therapy family wanted to remind you of the importance of sleep and provide strategies to improve your overall health. HOW MUCH SLEEP DO YOU REALLY NEED? There is no set number, no “one size fits all” number to success but the prevailing thought is most adults need seven to nine hours a night. Some manage fine with six to seven hours. But how much do YOU need? Two key indicators of good sleep are: • your willingness to get out of bed (do you wake up alert and refreshed) and • your overall energy level (are you irritable, sleepy or tired) during the day. TOP 3 REASONS SLEEP is IMPORTANT 1. Mood Lack of sleep (long- or short-term) may result in symptoms like irritability, impatience, inability to concentrate, and moodiness. In some cases, anxiety and depression may also result. 2. Cardiovascular health Serious sleep disorders like insomnia and sleep apnea have been linked to high blood pressure, increased stress hormone levels, cardiac arrhythmias, and increased inflammation. Studies have shown that the risk of heart attacks increases when you consistently sleep less than five hours per night. 3. Immunity/risk of disease Scientists have found that sleep deprivation alters immune function. If you don't get enough sleep, you may find yourself falling sick more often. STRATEGIES to IMPROVE SLEEP • Perform gentle, restorative stretching and controlled breathing exercises before bed. o Your Chiron Family can design a stretching program for you • Dim the lights in your bedroom before bedtime. Dimming the lights enables the body to begin to relax by “triggering” the body to wind down. • Turn the temperature down. Your body needs to cool to a certain temperature to reach a sound state of sleep so cooler bedroom temperatures are recommended. Your Chiron Physical Therapy family cares about all aspects of your health and wellness. Sleep is the foundation for recovery from injury and/or the exercise routines you enjoy. When you get enough sleep your body functions better making you stronger physically and mentally so … get some sleep this weekend.
Spring has arrived and with it brings promises of new life and new hope. Flowers will bloom. Gardeners will plant their seeds. Temperatures will rise. Days will be longer and the earth just seems to come to life again. Your Chiron family hopes the coming season is filled with hope, renewal and moments that warm your soul.
