Sophisticated and exotic, the La Palma wall covering by Cathrine Martin for Mokum, adds a whimsical mood to any space. @we_love_fabric @catherinemartindesigns
In the lobby at Groom, wood planking from my friends at NaturaPlank create a sense of warmth and escape. These planks are available online and are super easy to install. Since we were mixing shades of brown and grey throughout the day spa space, I ordered mostly the Chocolate Hazel Browns colorway, but mixed in a few of their grey planks to tie the space together. The peel-and-stick planks are sustainably-forested real wood and easy to install. They instantly transport the spa's clientele when they walk in the door.

During the first month of the pandemic lockdown, my aesthetician, Kyle, asked me to pick a couple paint colors for his day spa. I tried to do just that, but a flood inspiration came over me. And fair warning: Iโm not good at picking โjust a few paint colors.โ
Obviously, his type of business was completely shut down by the State orders during the initial quarantine, and in fact, he was only allowed to reopen a few weeks ago. He was closed for about six months.
So Kyle thought he would do a little updating to his space by painting some walls. He didn't have much budget -- but he had time. I had a little extra time, too.
Turns out, I couldnโt help myself but to design an entirely new โlookโ for his space. You know that I believe in the power of design. The power of design to transform our moods. The power of design to influence our behaviors. The power of design to level-up a business, and change a life in the process.
My team and I volunteered to come up with a plan for Kyle that included a complete redesign and even new branding. With a lot of sweat equity from Kyle, his parents, and my own team โ the vision was brought to life!
Several companies that I work with also opened up their hearts and wallets to support this local business. PlanIt Reprographics, who does all my plan printing, generously printed an incredible photo mural for me. (You will see that tomorrow's post!)
My good pal Lenny Vainberg, of Living Dรฉcor, donated the show-stopping NaturaPlank wood panels that adorn the treatment room, featured here, as well as the lobby. Thank you, thank you!
It's almost a cliche to say that giving back is really selfish, because it makes you feel so good. But in this case, it was absolutely true for me. Even though our design firm stayed busy during the pandemic, focusing on helping someone else kept my mind busy and my thoughts positive. Re-inventing this space for Kyle was one of the bright spots of 2020 for me, and really helped get me through the stressful time that was the initial lockdown.

Wow, you guys recently let me know that you really loved the gallery wall in our refreshed guest bedroom! It features all the artwork and mementos that didn't have a place elsewhere in our house, but still has a place in our hearts. In this pic, you can see our framed wedding invitation, a photo of Joshua Tree taken my brother, and a 70s print picked up at a local vintage market. And I love them all.

Fall is finally here in Palm Springs. The holidays are around the corner. Bring on all the texture and all the feels, please.

I plan to enjoy mine with a good book, a fire going, my goal-planning for the week, and some quality time with David and Harley. To tell the truth, Sundays would often make me anxious sad. Lately, I have chosen to reshape my attitude and look at Sundays in a whole different light.

Anyone else need a little Christmas...now? I do.
In these trying times, I choose to focus on tradition, faith, and love.
It's amazing how much joy a Christmas tree and roaring fire can bring. I can spend hours gazing at my tree and fire -- and I do, with a book or two, plus my sketchpad and journal.
During this Season of Love, as the days grow short, rituals of hearth and home become even more important. David has been spending time in our new makeshift kitchen (more on that soon -- I promise!) cooking up vegetable stews, pot roasts, and my mom's fudge recipe. We set the table every night, stoke the fire, and light the candles. We use the cloth napkins and the good dishes. What else are we waiting for? It's a reminder that every day is special, every dinner an event, and every moment golden.
After all, isn't each day a gift? Indeed, it truly is the Present. As California enters another lockdown, I will support my other local small businesses while looking for the unexpected blessings in these quiet hours.
Anyone else need a little Christmas...now? As California enters another lockdown, I choose to focus on cheer, light, and faith.
Itโs amazing how much joy a Christmas tree and a roaring fire bring me. I could stare at both for hours โ and I do, as I read a good book or write, draw, and journal.
As the days grow shorter, the simple pleasures of hearth and home bring extra joy. Letโs turn to the best of this Season of Love, my friends. A meaningful gift, not brash consumerism. Cooking together with family. David has been in our new makeshift kitchen (more on that soon - I promise!) cooking up roasts, stews, and my Momโs fudge recipe. Every morning, Harley and I are going on extra-long walks to balance out the fudge, and I have a new at-home workout called Basement Beast. We donโt have basements in Palm Springs, but thatโs ok.
And yes, starting at midnight tonight, I will be spending even more time at home. For the next three weeks. And thatโs ok. It doesnโt mean we must be apart. Send that text. Better yet, make that phone call. Plan that video chat.
Support your local businesses, my friends. They are probably offering takeout and gift cards; support them. Even just writing a Yelp or Google review can be a big help.
Sending you peace and joy and from Palm Springs.

Winter in the desert: grayish-white skies, but still pool weather. Just one of the many reasons that I am so grateful to live in this beautiful, magical place.
Whether you believe in God, or energy, or the Universe, or lay lines -- or, all of the above, as I do -- there is a metaphysical magic to this place. The energy is palpable. Who else feels it every time you visit? (Or, if you are like me, every morning when you wake up?)
David and I had spent approximately two weekends in Palm Springs when we decided to move here, back in 2003. But that is more than enough time to fall in love with the Coachella Valley -- would you agree?
We took a leap of faith, and it was the best decision we ever made. I often say that my interior designs, my products, my shop, my books...they are all really a love letter written to the town that has given me so much and that I am blessed to call home.

It's a new week and almost a new year. How are you spending it? Yes, I'm taking a little time to decompress after this roller-coaster of a year. But I also am spending time setting my intentions for 2021. That includes organizing my design library; cleaning my desk and computer desktop; meal planning and preparation; goal setting; meditation and more.
I'm proud of how I handled 2020 and it's my intention to say "hello" to 2021 on my terms and to start it off right. Who's with me?

When a client asked for a "wow" bedroom that's just a tad dark and dramatic -- but still modern -- we selected a show-stopping palm wall mural that evokes nighttime glamour. We also brought in metallic lamps, a geometric rug, and sculptural chairs. We left the ceiling of this 1950s Charles Du Bois-designed home in its natural wood state, to keep things just a bit earthy and organic.
I love mixing the contemporary chairs with the iconic Tulip table. As the saying goes: something old, something new... For the full tour of this property, visit the link in Profile.

You asked for her and she's back! Our RBG ornament is back in stock, just in time for Christmas. She will always be in style, but supplies are limited, so be sure to bring her home -- even if it's for next year's tree. We have her in-store (we are open on Christmas Eve 10a-2p) and online at https://www.christopherkennedy.com/product-page/rbg-ornament. Our felt ornaments are handmade in a village in Kyrgyzstan, helping support the local economy and allowing artisans to escape the cycle of poverty. Happy holidays, everyone!
Are your Saturdays for sleeping in -- or for projects? Mine are, admittedly, a bit of both. I tend to indulge myself with a bit of extra sleep before taking Harley for a long walk, followed by a workout at home. And, today, I am getting my mindset right for 2021 with the 21 Day Manifesting Challenge by @gabbybernstein and the tough love of @darrenhardy. This year isn't just going to magically be better, folks. In fact, I think we are in for a bad winter. Things get better when we make ourselves better. Constant improvement is the name of my game.
Speaking of, I can't believe how much you guys loved the makeover that I gave my guest room last fall. So here it is, again, see link below. It was good before, but -- like I said...constant improvement. I am always trying to #levelup...how 'bout you?

When we remodel midcentury bathrooms, we always strive to pay homage to the period while bringing in the best modern amenities. Here, we removed a sunken tub to create a grand shower experience. Dual shower heads and a bench across the back create a spa-like experience. While marble tiles lend a timeless feel while a contemporary tile in a breeze-block pattern creates a timeless midcentury focal point.
Cheers to the weekend! And, to the start of our "high season" here in Palm Springs. Yes, my friends, this is what winter looks like here in our fair desert.

Cool, classic, collected. Just how I like it. While I am often thought of for my use of color, my design methodology is actually to keep the foundation neutral, while adding color in the pillows and artwork. I love using modern classic pieces to add a sense of timelessness while adding interest in the artwork.
Pictured: the living room of PR Maven Nancy Joseph that I had the pleasure to help create, in the classic Canyon Estates community of Palm Springs.
Believe it or not, I am a simple guy. I like things easy. Life is complicated enough, right? I try not to get tricky with building materials. Marble was a design staple thousand of years ago -- and fifty ears ago. Who am I to mess with success?
In this Palm Springs living room, black marble edged with brass trim provides a simple-but-dramatic backdrop for artwork from my client's native South Africa, paired with a sculpture purchased on a trip overseas. The timeless material of marble, which is also surprisingly affordable, lets my client's collections take center stage.

Right about now, @the_decorhater and I would normally be in-the-weeds bringing The Christopher Kennedy Compound show house to life, which would typically open in about a month. Renovating a midcentury property over the winter holidays, with 12 or so of the nation's top designers and brands, is quite the experience! It's been my privilege, pleasure, and passion since 2014.
There will be no Compound this year, but it's fun to look. Loving this fresh, textural, and bright corner created by Josh Greene for The Christopher Kennedy Compound 2019.
My fave parts of this look: the grasscloth-wrapped walls (see yesterday's post), vintage sideboard, tabletop easel-mounted art, and simple vase with fresh flowers.
Neutral, natural, and textural were the key design choices in this bold space.โฃโฃ

Make an entrance! In this Movie Colony neighborhood entryway, we kept things fresh with vibrant green grasscloth, a midcentury mirror in rich wooden tones, and a Noguchi-inspired organic bench. Since the house has no coat closet, we brought in bronze wall-sculptures to lend a hand.

But today, the Rock cries out to us, clearly, forcefully,
Come, you may stand upon my
Back and face your distant destiny,
But seek no haven in my shadow.
I will give you no hiding place down here.
You, created only a little lower than
The angels, have crouched too long in
The bruising darkness
Have lain too long
Face down in ignorance.
Your mouths spilling words
Armed for slaughter.
The Rock cries out to us today, you may stand upon me,
But do not hide your face.
...
The horizon leans forward,
Offering you space to place new steps of change.
Here, on the pulse of this fine day
You may have the courage
To look up and out and upon me, the
Rock, the River, the Tree, your country.
No less to Midas than the mendicant.
No less to you now than the mastodon then.
Here, on the pulse of this new day
You may have the grace to look up and out
And into your sisterโs eyes, and into
Your brotherโs face, your country
And say simply
Very simply
With hope โ
Good morning.

Dinner Party, anyone? They will come back -- I promise! Trust me, I miss them, too. And I love how Nancy Price created this enchanting dining room for The Christopher Kennedy Compound 2015 Modernism Week Show House, as featured in Traditional Home magazine. Hang in there, friends. We got this! Dinner parties will return, and the reunion will be sweet.
For the last six years, on this second weekend of February โ we would be in the final preparations at The Christopher Kennedy Compound: Modernism Week Show House. We would have spent the last six-plus months renovating a midcentury property, bringing together a dozen of the nation's most renowned designers and the best brands in the business. Of course, in 2020-21, things look different. This year, I am grateful and happy to be focused on our wonderful design clients, but I do miss the connection. Connecting with fellow designers; connecting with my favorite brands; connecting with design lovers from across the country and globe. And, I will miss all the hugs that would tend to give out to the 5000 or so guests we would greet over 10 days. I really miss hugs, how about you?
Incredible powder room design by my right-hand man, work BFF, Show House co-producer, and all-around incredible human Keith Fortner. Flowers by Keith himself; artwork by Marco Lorenzetto.

Unexpected + delightful are our two priorities when it comes to design. We paired classic Hollywood Recency glam with natural California sophistication for a dining nook that invites guests to lounge way past 5 o'clock.
Feeling incredibly fortunate for the many clients that turn into friends โ and friends that turn into clients. What a lovely evening at #misuena

If you have followed me for a bit, you probably know that I lost my parents (all four of them) by the time I was in my very early 30s. It affected me greatly, and to this day, incorporating treasured possessions and memories of them into the home that I share with David is very important to me.
Coincidentally -- or not -- my firm now specializes in renovating properties that clients have inherited. It is my privilege, pleasure, and passion to help people honor their family's legacy while creating a functional and beautiful space for themselves and their next generation.
At this home in Rancho Mirage, we opened up the kitchen (drastically) and created sightlines to the dining room, plus an eat-in island. The chandelier in the dining room was an inherited piece as were the kitchen pendants. The pendants actually date back to the Victorian era, and I love how beautifully they juxtapose with the sleek Italian modern kitchen by Aran Cucine.
Burn bight, my friends. It's a fresh week!
I have seen maudlin brick or stone fireplaces in many homes from a variety of periods, including my parents' 1970s rancher where I grew up. A coat of white paint is an affordable and foolproof trick to update any hearth. Here, the crushed glass adds a dash of modernity to an otherwise vintage vibe.
Have you met Keith Fortner -- our firm's Creative Director? He is the one toasting me in this gorgeous picture taken at our Movie Colony project, just two doors from Frank Sinatra's famed Twin Palm estate. We like to celebrate our firm's 'wins' and, at least once a week, we work out a project's nuances after business hours. Often, it is only when the phones stop ringing and the emails stop dinging that we can really focus and get in the true creative zone. Luckily, we love what we do and it doesn't feel like work at all.
Clearly, we spend a lot of time together. I already have a work husband, my beloved @davidwclark5, so Keith is better described as my work BFF. In the eight years has worked at CKI, he has produced our show houses, created fabulous spaces for our beloved clients, seen me at my best + worst, and generally brought his flawless good taste to everything that Christopher Kennedy Inc creates. I am beyond grateful to have him at my side, every day.
Keith came to design after a full career on Broadway as a singer and dancer. The minute I met him, I knew that we was an intuitive, self-taught, knowledgable, and very 'aware' designer. To this day, I can cryptically reference an obscure Architectural Digest story from over a decade ago, and he will probably know exactly what I am referring to. It's rare in this world to find such a kinship, and I am grateful to have him at my side, every day. In case I don't say it enough: Thank you, Keith.

Often, I prefer fewer but bolder design moves โ such is the case with the kitchen that @the_decorhater and I designed for the Christopher Kennedy Show House in Turlock, 2019. We kept the focus on the architecture, especially the midcentury row of windows looking to the pool. Upper cabinets were removed and a 6โ Gaggenau cooking station takes center stage. One of my favorite countertops ever is used on the perimeter โ Misty Carrera by Corian Quartz. Stools by Essentials for Living.

Mid-week mood. Some moments are easy, and, then, suddenly, I'm just trying to hold it all together. How 'bout you? Or it just me?
But, really, I am just grateful for this ride called life. As I walk Harley each morning, I make sure to give thanks for the strength in my legs, the sun shining on my shoulders, the smile on my little orange dog, my incredible team, and the air I breathe. As I think about the miracle of all these things (and so many more) I am reminded that the Universe can solve any trivial or material issues that I may be facing. And, then, I turn them over and relax in the knowing that it. is. done.

One of my favorite powder rooms that that I have ever designed (circa 2008) and it represents a simple design trick that I use to this day. Plenty of negative space and concentrated pops of color! Here, a contemporary illuminated vanity and mirror by my friends at Neo-Metro are given some historic gravitas by pedigreed vintage art. Painting by Sewell Sillman courtesy of Francis Frost gallery.
