We were separating pacemaker cells from cardiac muscle and I remember being awestruck because the pacemaker cells kept beating even though they were no longer connected to the heart. This was elegant and fascinating to me, and set me on a path that led to multiple volunteer opportunities which solidified my course for a career in medicine.”
