Now that many of us are at home with our family, you can play fun boardgames like Monopoly. Did you know that Lizzie Magie invented this game? Monopoly was originally called The Landlord’s Game and was a critique of the injustices of unchecked capitalism. The idea for Monopoly was stolen by Charles Darrow and sold to Parker Brothers. If you like coffee you should know about Melitta Bentz? She was a German entrepreneur that invented better coffee filters making it easier to brew. Following some experimentation with different materials, she used blotting paper from her son's school exercise book as a filter. Her invention was patented and she set up a business to manufacture her filters. In fact, the Melitta Group is still making coffee, coffee makers, and filters today. Do you know about Martha Coston? She was granted a U.S. patent on April 5, 1859 for a pyrotechnic night signal and code system. Do you know about Bette Nesmith Graham? When using early electric typewritters, it was difficult to erase mistakes. Ms. Graham was a painter and realized that she could use tempera water-based paint to correct mistakes made on the typewritter.
