Chukwuemeka Ihemelandu, MD, is a board-certified surgical oncologist who approaches each patient with a desire to support them through their cancer journey, treating their emotional and spiritual needs while providing cutting-edge cancer therapies. Dr. Ihemelandu is one of the few experts in cytoreductive surgery and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) for patients with cancer of the gastrointestinal tract. He also specializes in stomach, pancreatic, colon, ovarian, mesothelioma and appendix cancers.
As an active cancer surgeon and researcher, Dr. Ihemelandu’s interests include analyzing the use of near-infrared fluorescent technology to identify microscopic cancer cells during surgery. He’s also involved in examining the molecular profile of abdominal tumors to learn better ways to personalize cancer treatment. Dr. Ihemelandu has published numerous articles in peer-reviewed journals.
After receiving his medical degree from the University of Nigeria Medical School, Dr. Ihemelandu went on to complete his residency in general surgery at Howard University Hospital, followed by a two-year fellowship in surgical oncology at Wake Forest University School of Medicine.
Dr. Ihemelandu practices as an Attending Surgical Oncologist at MedStar Washington Hospital Center. He’s also an Associate Professor of Surgical Oncology at Georgetown University School of Medicine and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons.
In addition to providing compassionate care to patients and teaching medical students, Dr. Ihemelandu enjoys spending time with his wife and two daughters.
