This spring, several of our own #MSKHealthcareHeroes were treated at MSK for COVID19. One of them was physician-scientist Dr. Yu Chen. In May, we shared a video of him being discharged from the hospital. We spoke with him recently to learn more about his experience and see how he’s been doing since. Dr. Chen told us he was diagnosed at the peak of the first wave of the pandemic in New York City. He began feeling progressively worse and was admitted to the hospital on April 7. He knew he wanted to be treated at MSK because he knew how outstanding the nurses are and how much they care about their patients. Dr. Chen ended up spending several days in the ICU, but was actually one of the first patients to receive convalescent plasma as part of a clinical trial at MSK. He improved very quickly within 24 hours and left the ICU three days later, then went home five days after that. He was able to begin working again from home within about a week. Dr. Chen says his colleagues were incredibly supportive throughout and rallied around his family. (Pictured here is the photo he and his two daughters sent to them to say thank you!) Luckily, he said he has no lingering effects from the disease. Above all, Dr. Chen said, “I really want to give a special shout out to the nurses and nurse assistants. The nurses were the true front line people. They make as big if not bigger impact on the inpatient care.” We’re so happy to have Dr. Chen back at work with us!

You may remember Enver and Miranda from their MSK wedding back in August. Enver was receiving inpatient treatment for leukemia which made them realize they didn’t want to wait to get married. So Enver’s care team made magic happen on M12 in what he calls the most emotional moment of his life. It even got featured in The New York Times! We checked in with them to see how they’re doing. Enver says that “married life is the best.” He was discharged from the hospital a week after the wedding and is currently undergoing outpatient chemotherapy. He says it’s been hard, especially because Miranda can’t be with him while he’s getting treatment due to the pandemic, but that the RNs at MSK make it as comfortable as possible and cheer him up. When Enver has time off from chemo, he and Miranda try to make the most of their time together by going on hikes and doing things like celebrating Hanukkah. They’re looking forward to an end to the pandemic so they can celebrate their marriage with friends and family. When asked what he would like to tell his previous self from August, Enver said, “Just listen to what your wife says. She is going to be right about almost everything in the next four months and perhaps in the future.” Very wise words! 😉
