While the pandemic has made things more challenging than ever, Goffstown, New Hampshire, Branch Manager, Melissa, still managed to step up in a big way for a customer who was going through a very challenging time.
In fact, she made such an impact that the customer wrote her a letter of gratitude.
“At the end of the day, when you didn’t really have to, you put on your superhuman cape and jumped right in. If I worked at Citizens Bank, I would start a Human Kindness campaign and have you be a part of the taskforce.”
We couldn’t agree more! Thank you, Melissa, for your dedication to our customers and your commitment to kindness! 💚

Volunteering has been a huge part of Kingston Branch Manager Jane’s life since she was just a teenager.
For the past 20 years, she’s served on the board of directors for several nonprofit organizations, but for the last several years, she has concentrated her efforts on the Kingston NY Farmers Market, a year-round weekly event that has over 50 vendors who supply farm fresh food and goods to the local community.
People come from all over the tri-county area to purchase healthy food choices. On any given Saturday in the summer, the farmers market can have over 2,000 attendees, and in the winter months, the food bank sets up in a church hall to provide year-round service. The market accepts SNAP benefits, and children get tickets to buy free or discounted goods.
“It feels really good to know that you are contributing to the health and well-being of people in your community,” Jane says.
We’re beyond proud to have employees like Jane who dedicate their time and efforts to serving their communities. 💚

How do you mentor the women around you in the workplace? Jess, Head of Portfolio Management & Underwriting in Commercial Banking, believes that both formal and informal mentorship relationships are important.

She believed in my potential and showed me that I could transfer my skills to another industry. That’s why I participate in Business Resource Groups and why I mentor several women, both formally and informally. It’s a way for me to pay it forward.”

Since 2005, we’ve hosted Year Up interns to provide hands-on corporate training to young adults. This year, it’s gone virtual, but the ability to stay connected has allowed our colleagues to continue to support and volunteer with Year Up. Volunteers have been able to participate in resume reviews, mock interviews, networking events — even a virtual career fair as well as host interns on their teams.
Just before our 21 interns in Rhode Island graduated this past summer, Derek Valego, a Senior Risk Manager, had the opportunity to meet with them to provide valuable career advice as they prepare for the workforce.
“The Year Up interns are so bright and forward thinking,” Derek shares. “I really enjoyed my experience working with them! Getting the chance to mentor and help these young professionals become successful for the future is something I think both parties cherish.”
We’re committed to helping young people prepare for the future. Through our partnership with Junior Achievement Junior Achievement last year, we “adopted” classrooms in 24 locations where we helped to implement the JA Career Success program to equip students with the skills required for jobs in high-growth industries. Our colleagues provided financial literacy and career readiness training to help students prepare to earn and keep a job.

For Ray Sykes, VP, Student Lending Relationship Manager, giving back has always been part of his life.
While volunteering has looked different for many this year, Ray and his sons — both Eagle Scouts of Boy Scouts of America Troop 195 and he the committee chair — found a way to safely place flags at over 5,500 veterans’ graves at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in preparation for Memorial Day. A 20-year tradition, Ray thought wouldn’t be possible, but he worked with the New York cemetery on a socially distant plan.
“The most rewarding part for me is seeing my boys getting involved with volunteering to give back to the community,” says Ray, who also serves on the board of directors of the Urban League of Rochester.
For others looking to get involved, Ray suggests connecting with local organizations in your area to explore safe virtual ways you can give back.

"I’ve witnessed Apartheid and what it can do to society. I was brought up with values that we are all equal and belong to the human race. That the color of our skin does not define anyone. However, we should not be color blind, because that robs ourselves and our children of our identity. When we do ignore differences, it diminishes us all,” Citizens Internal Auditor Ana Isabel dos Reis-Couto told us.

“Growing up, my grandmother often volunteered for various community service efforts,” remembers Shana Wells, Executive Assistant, Consumer Banking. “I recall a time in which she was in charge of a food drive. She had a big truck full of food on a mission to help people in need. She not only distributed food, but also comforted people. Seeing her acts of selflessness always stuck with me and motivates me to give back when I can.”
This year, Shana has devoted much of her time to the American Red Cross Virginia Region as a virtual intake and screening volunteer, matching volunteers to positions that relate to their interests or background.
“I enjoy this role because it allows me to connect people with their passions, so they can give back to their communities,” says Shana, who also supported the general and local elections by making sure people were registered to vote, discussing ways to plan their vote, and recruiting other volunteers.
Shana’s motto for others who want to donate their skills and time: A small gesture makes a huge difference.

Last year we highlighted our colleague Frank McGrane’s involvement with Covenant House Pennsylvania and their work raising awareness on behalf of homeless young people. This year marked Frank’s 8th Sleep Out despite the event going virtual due to COVID-19.
“I’m proud to participate in the Sleep Out because this one cold night every November really connects me to the mission of Covenant House Pennsylvania – an organization committed to helping young people turn the tragedy of homelessness into an opportunity for growth and transformation. Over the years, our Sleep Out in Philadelphia has grown from a small group of concerned advocates into a large and successful annual fundraiser. This year an in-person Sleep Out wasn’t in the cards because of COVID-19, yet roughly 200 participants from across the region stepped-up and slept out virtually from their own back yards,” shares Frank, whose son joined him for the first time.
This year was the second best fundraiser in the history of the event. We couldn’t be more proud to call Frank a Citizens colleague. Know someone doing something incredible for their community? Give them a shout out below. 👇

It hit a low of 48 degrees in Philadelphia the night of November 21st. Frank was sleeping on the street with his friend and coworker Mike and more than 175 others to help raise money and awareness on behalf of homeless young people. Covenant House Pennsylvania's annual Executive Sleep Out is “easily one of the most memorable nights of the year,” Frank shares.
His journey with the nonprofit started many years ago as a donor in NYC. Fast-forward to the early 2000s when, almost serendipitously, Citizens had just given a grant to Covenant House to launch its programs locally. After an introduction prompted by a coworker, Frank transitioned from donor to volunteer board member — a position that he’s proudly held for the past 15 years.
“When I first joined the board, it was still in a start-up mode,” he says. “Today we have a continuum of services, including our flagship Crisis Center (which has grown to 76 beds); a transitional housing program; a street outreach program; an onsite health clinic in partnership with Children's Hospital of Philadelphia; and, most recently, a new program in York, PA.”
For those looking to get involved in their local community, Frank suggests exploring ideas with friends and coworkers. “My colleagues in Fort Washington have shared their own volunteer passions and I’ve joined them at events from time to time. At the same time, they’ve all been terrific in supporting my work with Covenant House.”
A couple weeks ago, in partnership with Dining Playbook, we hosted a virtual cooking event with Boston Magazine’s Best Pastry Chef Rachel Sundet of Mamaleh's Delicatessen’s. Participants learned how to make delicious tahini cookies! 👩🍳🍪

Can you recall something you missed out on due to the pandemic? When branch manager, Allison, found out that one of her regular customers, Cheryl, had not only missed her mother’s 105th birthday celebration, but that she also couldn’t access the photos of the party online, she knew she had to do something.

We couldn’t be more thankful for colleagues like Allison who go out of their way to give back to our customers during these challenging times. Thank you, Allison, for being so thoughtful when it comes to our customers. 💚

With so much to do with a new baby at home, it can be easy to forget about managing your finances, especially for first-time parents. Shani recommends focusing on taking advantage of rewards programs for routine purchases, because the savings on things like diapers and wipes can really add up.
Another thing she’s focused on? “Starting a savings account for the baby right away is essential. You get so busy with an infant that financial decisions are often put off and forgotten about,” shares Shani. “So I recommend determining what your priorities are early, and it’s okay if they change over time.”

Tax season is here, and so is the possibility of tax identity theft. That’s what happens when someone files a fake return using your Social Security number in order to get a refund — but keeping your data secure online can help protect you from that.
Ready to defend yourself against cybercriminals? Check out these tips:
• File early in the tax season.
• Use a secure Internet connection.
• Make sure you’re using the legitimate IRS website — www.IRS.gov.
• If you store your tax records on your computer, make sure you encrypt them.
• Don’t respond to any alleged IRS phone calls, texts or emails — the IRS will only contact you via mail.
• Only give out your SSN if absolutely necessary and try not to carry your card with you.

Congratulations to the Year Up Rhode Island Winter 2021 graduating class!
We've partnered with this organization for over 15 years to provide hands-on corporate training to 18 to 24 year olds who are entering the workforce. Recently, we had the pleasure of being the signature sponsor for the recent graduation of several students.
One of the many things that made this class one of a kind, was that its students were the first of many cohorts across the country to complete the entire program virtually. Despite this challenge, they still showed up to their classes and internships with the grit and determination to finish.
While attending their virtual graduation, we learned three of the interns we hosted won awards for the leadership and excellence they displayed over the last year. Lady, pictured below, had this to say: "Year Up paired me with a great company and a great team. I learned so much during my internship as a data analyst. I discovered my love for data analytics and am now pursuing my degree!"
We’re proud to be a company that celebrates diversity. We know it’s not just important to talk about this, but to take actions to hold ourselves accountable for change. Learn some of the steps we’ve recently taken in our journey for social equity.

No one should have to pick between their health and their budget when it comes to their food. Daily Table was created with a simple goal: to make affordable and healthy food accessible to all. This nonprofit grocer, based in Dorchester, MA, uses donations and surplus products to offer its clients access to healthy food choices, enabling them to take control of their diets and provide for their families.
Each month, Daily Table sells 1 million servings of dairy, produce, prepared foods, meat, poultry, fish, and dry goods, and their commissary kitchen prepares 20,000 fresh Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP)-eligible "heat and eat" meals.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, Daily Table has been helping those with financial challenges afford healthy food at an average savings of 30%. It also launched a new grocery delivery service that allows immune-suppressed individuals, seniors, and school-age children to get the healthy food they need.
As one of our 2021 Champions in Action, Daily Table will receive $35,000 in unrestricted funds and a complimentary membership to the Massachusetts Nonprofit Network. It will also get volunteer, public relations, and promotional support, plus coverage and public service announcements from NECN.
The nonprofit is using this funding to support more than 4,000 customers this year. Learn more about Daily Table and our other Champions in Action here: http://spr.ly/6187HcgzZ

Like many small businesses, ABC Learn with Me, Inc., a child care center in Connecticut, was struggling to get through 2020. Other child care centers in the area had closed, and were urging owner and director, Robin Golia, to do the same. Staying open would likely result in heavy operational losses and place Robin in a very risky financial position.
Nevertheless, she stayed open for her staff and customers.
“My employees were too good to lose and our parents, especially those who are essential workers, needed us to be open,” Golia noted. “Front-line workers are doing so much for us right now, and I had to make it all work for them.”
Read on to see how this small business was made ready to make it through with a little help from a PPP loan through Citizens and a lot of heart.

Center of Life (COL) was founded nearly 20 years ago to build stronger communities by providing families and youth with life skills, education, training, and resources. It employs a holistic approach to community service through rich, academic out-of-school programs and outstanding experiences with the arts, as well as programs for parents and community members.
In response to the COVID-19 Pandemic, COL quickly pivoted in-house programs to a virtual curriculum for students and parents. In partnership with other community organizations, it helped distribute more than 170,000 meals and more than 1,000 masks, in addition to helping provide access to technology and resources to students and families.

COL also conducted parent workshops and assisted with emergency needs like water heaters, bill paying assistance, and clothing. Its Family Engagement Program offers access to professional counselors for wellness check-ins and virtual wellness workshops.
