Did you know cats really do get stuck in trees? It's because they are built for climbing up, but not so much for climbing down. Their retractable claws are curved and their hind legs are stronger than their front, which makes them agile climbers going up, but that same physiology makes it difficult to maneuver down.

As a pet owner, you know at some point you'll have to care for an aging pet. Make these tips part of your furry companion's routine to keep them healthy as long as possible.
There is only one breed of Chihuahua, but the variation within the breed is amazing. These tiny dogs have long coats, smooth coats, a diversity of coat colors, and even two distinct head shapes (an apple-shaped head or a deer-shaped head.). They weigh a feather-light 4-6 pounds, and stand only 6-10 inches tall.
Chihuahuas are low-maintenance dogs when it comes to grooming, but they can be high-maintenance when it comes to training. They can become devoted to a single person and become protective, which can make living in a house with children a challenge. This isn't to say Chihuahuas can't make great family dogs, but the personality of the dog and the patience and training by the family are important factors.

Who can resist these wrinkly cuties? Originally bred as guard dogs and hunters, Shar-Pei are described as intelligent, regal and independent and are noted for their fierce loyalty to their owners. The Shar-Pei coat is short and coarse, falling in heavy folds around the dog's head, neck and shoulders. It's the wrinkles that make Shar-Pei so memorable. Shar-Pei's wrinkles are caused by the hyaluronic acid synthase 2 (HAS2) gene. "HAS2 encodes an enzyme synthesizing hyaluronan, a major component of the skin," she says. "The hyaluronan is up-regulated and accumulates in the thickened skin of Shar-Pei."
In hyper-layman's terms, hyaluronan is a sort of "gel" around the cells in the skin. Among other things, it aids in hydration and elasticity of the skin. In a Shar-Pei, the HAS2 gene goes into overdrive creating way too much hyaluronan and that causes the trademark wrinkles, which are especially visible in Shar-Pei puppies. By the time a Shar-Pei is full grown, its wrinkles have settled down and are typically just in the face, head and neck.

Winter is upon us and here in NYC we're getting ready for our first big snow of the season. Make sure you have everything you need to keep your pup warm and safe through the cold months. Some breeds are better suited for the cold than others so know your dogs specific needs. A good rule to go by is if you are cold your dog is as well so be sure you are limiting their time outside. Its also important to protect their paws, the cold snow on its own can cause pain but its especially important if you live in the city or an area where they salt the roads and sidewalks. The salt can be very damaging so if you don't have booties be sure to wash their paws thoroughly with a warm washcloth after going out.

We're only a few days away from the first day of winter and it's important to keep your pet warm. Dog breeds like corgis, greyhounds, small-bodied terriers and other short-haired dogs can wear coats while going on walks to stay insulated.

The Afghan has a regal appearance owing to its proud carriage and long, silky coat. Its strong, arched neck, prominent hips, large paws, seemingly exaggerated bend at the knees and a tail ending in a doughnut bend, give the breed a distinctive profile.
The Afghan hound is a "high maintenance" dog for a number of reasons. Though highly intelligent, Afghans can be difficult to train because they are stubborn. They are highly sensitive to harsh correction, which often elicits a refusal to obey. They respond best to gentle guidance and firm discipline. Regular grooming is key to maintaining the Afghan's coat. Afghans require weekly baths and brushing to remove dead hair and to prevent the tangling and matting to which they are prone. Adult Afghans shed in the spring and fall, and after illnesses; unspayed females shed their coats after every season.

The Selkirk Rex is famous for her plush, curly hair that has earned her the nickname "the cat in sheep's clothing." Her loose, flowing curls and curly whiskers are present at birth. The curly-haired gene is dominant, but not all Selkirks are born with these ringlets. Some have straight hair. The long-haired Selkirks have long ringlets, while the short-hairs tend to have shorter, tighter curls. Her "teddy-bear" physical traits make her the perfect option for pet parents looking for a fun-loving and cuddly friend.
What the Selkirk Rex cat breed does have in common with her rex relatives is a lively, energetic, and friendly temperament. She has a vivacious personality and is patient with youngsters as well as dogs (so long as they return the love), making her a great addition to a family with children and other pets.
