cj team members recently volunteered to take a 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge to educate ourselves on the experiences of Black people in America. Through readings, podcasts, and discussion groups, the Challenge helped us speak frankly with our Black team members about how recent events have affected them, and what we can do better. The 21-Day Racial Equity Challenge is a rewarding and occasionally challenging experience that we feel is important. We encourage others to take part and learn more about the difficulties our fellow Americans continue to face every day: https://bit.ly/2YsWjIo

For Black History Month, we’re sharing stories that move us, inspire us, and push us to make positive changes. This week, we’re remembering the life of Macon Bolling Allen, who taught himself to read and write and later became the first African American lawyer and judge. A true American pioneer, Allen’s accomplishments amidst the racism and prejudice of the mid-1800s paved the way for generations of Black lawyers and activists. cj client Cory Watson wrote a wonderful blog about Allen, which you can read here: https://bit.ly/3pYAZGt
Our 2nd Black History Month inspirational story is about Vincent Cullers, founder of the first Black-owned full-service ad agency. Despite being an experienced art director at Ebony magazine, Cullers faced prejudice and was unable to break into the white-dominated ad industry. In response, he launched Vince Cullers Advertising in Chicago in 1956, which produced national ads for Amoco, Kellogg, Pizza Hut, and Sears that depicted minorities in positive imagery. Cullers’ bold move inspired others, and by 1972, there were 25 Black agencies in the U.S.
Congrats to our Camel of the Month: Brand Assistant Jeremy Adams! More referrals mean more cases! Our years of experience in the legal industry has shown us that high-value cases often come from past clients or people in your network, and the top reason people call specific lawyers is because someone told them to. So how do you get more referrals? The best way is to mine your database and ASK, and our latest blog post shows you 3 easy ways to do just that. Learn more at https://bit.ly/3q3rUMt
Our Creative Services team is looking for a copywriter to join the herd! This wordsmith will write for TV commercials, web videos, and agency marketing projects. This week, we spotlight Carol H. Williams, who entered the ad business in 1969 when young African-American women were underrepresented in the industry. Despite having no female mentors or bosses to learn from, Carol went on to create several successful campaigns and eventually became creative director at Leo Burnett. In 1986, Carol launched her own agency—Carol H. Williams Advertising (CHWA). Today, CWHA has just under 40 employees and three locations. It has created campaigns for Wells Fargo, Buick, the U.S. Army, and Disney, including its famous “Signs” commercial featuring a boy communicating with his grandfather via sign language. In 2017, Carol’s significant achievements were recognized when she became the first Black female creative director inducted into the AAF Advertising Hall of Fame.

For his tenure gift, Nekos got DJ equipment to take his vinyl-spinning passion to the next level. Congrats on 10 years, Nekos! We're so grateful to have you!
To cap off our Black History Month spotlight, we’re sharing a timeline video showcasing Black pioneers in the legal industry. This video showcases only a handful of the many contributions that Black Americans have made and continue to make in the legal field. At cj, we honor and recognize these achievements both during Black History Month and every month of the year.
