The air is beginning to cool and Autumn begins next week! It's the perfect time to get a jump on your fall cleaning and preparing your home for the winter. Our family here at Clean Image would like to remind you to keep fire safety in mind as you start waking up your fireplaces for the colder seasons. Be sure to check your chimney and that nothing flammable has been shifted too close to the fireplace over the summer.

If you have pets, your air ducts could look like this. Pet hair, dander, and dust settle in your vents, then get recirculated into the air when you run the system. Not only that, but it also makes your carpets dirtier too!
Your carpets work as a filter for the air by grabbing dust and dander and holding onto it. So, not only do your pets track dirt from outside into the carpets, they also spread it into your vents which just causes it to settle into your carpets even more. Talk about double trouble!

Water damage can sneak up on you. It's not always gushing out of a burst pipe or raining down from the ceiling during a storm. Sometimes it's just a steady drip under the sink, hidden behind your cleaning products and stored items. You may have heard that dryer lint buildup is one of the most common causes of household fires, but it's not just the lint trap in the dryer that can be dangerous.
Hot, moist air moves through the dryer vent in the back causing condensation to capture lint as it moves past. This can create a thick buildup of lint as shown in this image! The more lint blocking the passage of that hot air, the higher the risk of it catching fire becomes.
So, make sure that you're cleaning out the lint trap before every load, but also make sure to have your dryer vent professionally cleaned at least once a year depending on your dryer usage. Keeping your dryer vent clean can also improve the efficiency of your dryer and save you money!

How often should you clean your air ducts?
If you answered "every three to five years" then you are correct! This is a basic guideline to consider when looking at air duct cleaning and should be accurate for most homes. However, if you're noticing the build-up of dirt and dust around your vents then it may be time to call and schedule an air duct cleaning. (So if you answered "whenever they look dirty" then you're also right!)

One thing that should be on your fall cleaning checklist is your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors! Not only should you check the batteries regularly, but did you know that you should also dust and vacuum them?
When they're clogged up by dirt and dust, they are not able to do their job as reliably as we need them to. Just performing regular cleaning and maintenance can be life-saving. Always follow the manufacturer's instructions in caring for your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.

One of the best things about the colder months is curling up with a nice hot drink and letting it warm you up. For me, it's an Oregon Chai Tea in my cup as I sit at the front desk, ready to take your calls. Just a little caffeine and a lot of that comforting warmth to keep me in good spirits throughout the day!

As the temperatures start getting colder it's time to start thinking about protecting your home for the winter. A quick prepping step that can make a big impact is remembering to unhook your hoses, drain them of water, and store them away for the winter to prevent freezing.

We hope that you never lose the joy of splashing in puddles, crunching those autumn leaves, and kicking around snow flurries (I've heard snow may come early this year! Have you heard the same?). But when it's time to come home, remember to leave the fall fun off of your carpets! A designated area for taking shoes off when you come into the home can prevent tracking in leaves, mud, and moisture that could potentially lead to mold if you leave wet shoes on your absorbent carpets.

How Dog Sparked a Fire by Turning on the Stove
A weird-looking spider? No! It's an InjectiDry system!
This piece of equipment is great for getting access to water inside of your walls. Some walls can be dried by blowing hot, dry air right along the surface. However, other walls may be impenetrable due to the paint that is used, or a number of other factors. When the wall is impenetrable, we can use this system to blow air inside with minimal damage to the wall itself.

How do we know when water is hiding behind walls?
One of the ways that we detect where water is hiding is using our thermal camera. As you can see in the first image, the purple areas are cold spots that indicate where water is lurking in the ceiling. In the second image we have used our injectidry system to bring hot, dry air to the water, which works to reduce moisture levels in materials until they're dry. That bright yellow glow means that our drying equipment is hard at work!
Did you know that we can clean smoke odors with smoke?
Well, not exactly. Thermal fogging heats up a deodorizer and then spreads it throughout the area, getting into even those hard to reach places. The fog imitates smoke, absorbing the smoke molecules and getting rid of that lingering odor. Here is one of our technicians using the thermal fogging process in a home that has been affected by fire damage.
