Picture this, you are getting short bouts of vertigo/ dizziness brought on by changes in head position. You tell your friend about it and they say "It is probably the crystals in your ear!" But what does that mean? It means you probably have BPPV!! It stands for Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo. What happens: we have three loop shaped structures called semicircular canals that contain fluid and hair like structures that monitor head rotation. We have another structure called the utricle that contains otoliths (or crystals) that monitor up and down/ left and right movement of the head. When the crystals become dislodged and move into the semicircular canals is what makes you feel dizzy!
Auditory processing disorder (APD) is when the individual's hearing sensitivity is normal but processing and understanding what is heard is compromised. Most the time the child will pass a basic hearing test, but the ears and brain do not fully coordinate. This interferes with the brain's ability to recognize and interpret sound. . Of the children struggling in school, APD affects 43% of them. It can easily be overlooked or mistaken for other learning disabilities or conditions such as ADD. . APD may also coexist with speech and language delays, dyslexia, learning disabilities, autism spectrum disorder, sensory integration disorder, visual perceptual or visual processing deficits, and hearing loss.
