Regular, routine maintenance such as oil changes, tire rotations, fluid checks, etc., help to prevent more serious problems. By maintaining your vehicle, you help stretch your dollar, not only in the initial purchase price, but by increasing the chance you’ll avoid having more expensive repairs and parts down the road. http://autorepairfrederickmd.com
Always fill your tires to the recommended psi! If you aren’t sure where to find that information for your vehicle, check your owner’s manual or ask your mechanic. Overfilling your tires is not advised! http://autorepairfrederickmd.com
If your wheel vibrates at odd moments, or when turning, get it checked by a mechanic as soon as you can. It could be due to a number of things, such as tire pressure, brakes, low power steering fluid, and more. http://autorepairfrederickmd.com

In general, driving at high speeds over 50mph does cause your fuel economy to drop. The Dept of Energy says that you can assume that for every 5mph you go over 50, it’s roughly like paying an extra $.19 for a gallon of gas. You can read more at their website: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.jsp

Rooftop storage can have a negative effect on your fuel economy. A better strategy, if possible, is to use rear-mount storage. Rooftop storage boxes can cause aerodynamic drag and reduce gas mileage up to 8% in city driving and as much as 17% on the highway. You can read more at the Dept of Energy’s website: https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/driveHabits.jsp
The pressure in your tires is critical to optimal and safe performance. Incorrect tire pressure can lead to a potential blowout, or weaker, shorter life of your tires.

Vehicles vary in their tune-up requirements. Your recommended time periods can be found in your owner’s manual. Figuring out exact times for all vehicles as a rule can be tricky, as a tune up covers parts of varying use and durability. Some fluids, for example, may need to be checked and replaced every 3,000 miles, while a PCV valve can go for fifty thousand miles or more. http://autorepairfrederickmd.com
Do you know what a hubcap is meant to do? It helps protect the wheel’s hardware from rust and corrosion, and also helps reduce accumulation of dirt and moisture around the wheel. http://autorepairfrederickmd.com

Just like the outside of our windows, the insides get dirty as well. Dust, dirt, and airborne particulates stick to the inside of the windows and if not kept clean, will reduce your visibility. Dirty windows can also increase the amount of glare you’re seeing while driving. Ditch the spare napkin and clean your windows right with these tips! http://autorepairfrederickmd.com/

If you notice that your turn signal is blinking faster or doesn’t turn on when it should, then your bulb is likely burnt out and needs to be replaced. It’s a good idea to do a quick inspection of all lights and the exterior of your car every time you drive to catch issues like this as soon as possible.
Is your battery ready for winter? You can get it ready by having it tested if it’s more than a few years old, cleaning off corrosive buildup, and ensuring the clamps are tight enough to not move. http://autorepairfrederickmd.com/
A brake issue can be a precursor to much, much larger problems. If you notice any brake issues, be sure to come in and have them handled by our ASE Certified technicians right away. Keep an eye and ear out for these common signs of brake problems. http://autorepairfrederickmd.com/
As your wipers wear down from use, heat, and the elements, the rubber can begin to crack. If you go long enough without changing the blades, you risk exposing metal on the wipers, which can damage your windshield. Plan to change your wiper blades every six months or as needed.
If your wheel vibrates at odd moments, or when turning, get it checked by a mechanic as soon as you can. It could be due to a number of things, such as tire pressure, brakes, low power steering fluid, and more. http://autorepairfrederickmd.com
Your wipers can degrade quickly, some after only 6 months of use. Winter can be hard on this part of your car – check and replace your blades if you need to.
Aside from age of the bulb itself, one of the main reasons bulbs burn out is condensation around the casing. Regular maintenance can catch and prevent most issues like this. As always, if you have any questions, feel free to contact us! http://autorepairfrederickmd.com/
Winter can cause a number of issues with your car that you may not be prepared for. A common issue whenever the temperature drops is low air pressure or flat tires. As the temperatures drop, you lose air pressure in the tires. It’s a good idea to keep a tire pressure gauge in your glove compartment or center console, and learn where to find the recommended psi for your vehicle (usually on a sticker on the driver’s door frame). Check your tire pressure periodically throughout the colder months or whenever your tires start to look low. Questions? Give us a call! http://autorepairfrederickmd.com/
Winter can cause a number of issues with your car that you may not be prepared for. One of the most common problems is a dead battery. Cold temperatures can cause older batteries to die, and you can jumpstart a battery only so many times before it loses efficiency. If you think your battery could become a problem this winter, come by one of our shops and we’d be happy to help you out! http://autorepairfrederickmd.com/
When winter gets into full gear and the temperatures fall below 32, it’s possible for your windshield wiper fluid to freeze in the tank. When this happens, do NOT attempt to use it, as this could make the ice on your window worse. Before the next snowstorm hits, make sure you have wiper fluid with an antifreeze component. You will also want to tilt your wipers up when a snowstorm is approaching to avoid damage to the wipers themselves. Questions? Give us a call! http://autorepairfrederickmd.com/
Happy holidays!
Do you have a first aid kit in your car? You never know when you might need one. You can create your own or purchase an automobile kit. Make sure you maintain the kit and regularly replace used and expired materials. At some point, we’ve all seen this symbol. That weird, incomplete circle with an exclamation mark in it (sorta looking like a bulging cookie jar) is your vehicle’s way of telling you that there is a problem with your air pressure. This could mean that you have a low tire, which is an easy fix. Tires have sensors on them to let you know when it’s time to properly inflate. However, it could also mean that the sensor itself is damaged or worn out. Either way, it’s always important to check your air pressure when you see this warning indicator and, if your tires are properly inflated, have the sensors checked. Oil change frequency used to follow a simple rule: every 3,000 miles or six months is probably what you heard growing up. Today, it’s more nuanced than that. The primary indicator as to how often you need an oil change is based more on your driving habits than anything else. Do you typically drive more than 20 miles for your daily commute? Then it’s probably safe to follow your manufacturer or vehicle’s warning light recommendation (which can range from 6,000 to up to 10,000 miles!) However, if you don’t drive far or often, you may want to consider sticking to the 3,000 mile rule. It boils down (pun intended) to how hot your oil gets within your engine. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/oil-change-truths/ Call us today: 301-631-0050 or 301-631-9292!

Do wheel alignments really matter? In a word, yes! Not only does an improperly aligned front end cause unbalanced wear and tear on your tires, but it can create other issues for your vehicle as well. If you feel a consistent pull to the right or left while driving, it’s time to get an alignment before the cost of repair gets too high. Call us today: 301-631-0050 or 301-631-9292!
“There it is again: the check engine light! I thought I just got that fixed!” The truth is, the check engine light has a wide range of codes associated with it. Sometimes in older vehicles it’s as simple as a gas cap that needs tightened. With others, it’s an annual maintenance light to let you know to get in for a general tune up. No matter what the situation, it’s always best to have the code reviewed, even if you just had it looked at a short while ago. Your stomach growling doesn’t mean you’re sick, it’s just that you’re hungry. Likewise, the check engine light doesn’t always mean your car needs a huge repair, but rather is an indicator to have it looked at. Call us today: 301-631-0050 or 301-631-9292!

Do you see a “boat” on your vehicle dash? That’s not a ship sailing on the seas. It’s a warning light to check your coolant levels. If this light pops up, be sure to take care of it right away! Call us today: 301-631-0050 or 301-631-9292!
It may be time to take your car in for a tune up, but do you know what that actually means? In newer vehicles, a tune up can be minor items such as replacing fluids, filters or performing an inspection. With older ones, it can range from the need to replace spark plugs to new cables. In other words, a tune up for your brand new car will look a lot different than one for a 10 year old pickup, but they’re all equally important. https://www.autozone.com/diy/maintenance/tune-up-guide Call us today: 301-631-0050 or 301-631-9292!

Thankfully, not every “bad” sound coming from your brakes is indicative of an issue. Often, in the early morning when you start your car your brakes will sound different. Does your dash have what looks like a person sitting in a seat getting a huge dodgeball thrown in their face? If so, that’s actually your vehicle’s way of telling you there’s a problem with your airbag system. Now, on some vehicles this will come on when it detects a certain level of weight on the seat. It turns the airbag off as a safety precaution if the weight is too low (assuming there may be a child in the seat.) But if your seat is empty and this light comes on, it’s time to have the system inspected to ensure it’s working properly. Call us today: 301-631-0050 or 301-631-9292!

How often do you let your gas tank run all the way down to empty (or *just above* empty)? Running on fumes isn’t good for your car. Quick, who can tell us what this reading means? If you said a reading of 29PSI, you’re right! While each car manufacturer will have a specified tire pressure requirement, generally speaking it’ll be in the range of 30-32PSI. So while 29 is a *bit* low, it’s not too far off. #MaintenanceTips

Have you ever seen a light on your dash that looks just like this, but had no idea where it came from? It’s nothing to be worried about — your car is just telling you that you enabled its cruise control. Usually, if cruise control is enabled but not engaged, the light will be orange. If it’s enabled and engaged, it’ll be green. But, if you ever have a warning light you can’t identify, contact us ASAP. We’ll help you figure out what it is and if your vehicle needs to be serviced. Call us at 301-631-0050 or 301-631-9292.
