"In honor of Native American Heritage Month in the U.S., today’s video Doodle—created in partnership with Native American guest artists Lydia Cheshewalla, Chris Pappan, and Yatika Starr Fields— celebrates Maria Tallchief, member of the Osage Nation who was America’s first, major prima ballerina. Not only a trailblazer for Native American dancers, Tallchief is widely considered one of the country’s most influential ballerinas of all time. On this day in 2007, a bronze sculpture of Tallchief and four other Native American ballerinas was unveiled in Oklahoma at the Tulsa Historical Society in a piece titled “The Five Moons” by artist Gary Henson."

I Gatecrashed the Royal Ballet School Summer Intensive (and it was one of the best things I’ve done)
The beautiful Josephine Baker was one of the first black women to impact the dance world. She began performing throughout Europe in the 1920s and continued to do so for the next 50 years. She had a sensual and confident bravery that allowed her fame and recognition throughout her career. Though she did not perform often in the United States, she worked closely with the NAACP to fight segregation. When she passed away, thousands of people in Paris watched the funeral procession.

In honor of Black History Month, we will be sharing several prominent dancers who helped impact the dance world. First to learn about is Bill "Bojangles" Robinson.
Bill Bojangles Robinson was a tap dancer, actor and singer. This talented dancer appeared in mistrel shows and vaudeville before making his way to Broadway and Hollywood. He danced along side Shirley Temple in many films. His style was smooth and rhytmic with an effortless ease. Any time I watch a clip of him dancing I am mesmorized.
