Hello Everyone,
Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Happy Kwanzaa, Happy Winter Solstice and all that great stuff. I have been thinking about New Years, and with that in mind, I thought I would create a post to help all of you achieve your new years resolutions with much greater success. So here is a list of things you can do when planning said resolutions that will greatly enhance your success for 2021. This post is a little long, but the steps are quick and easy.
1.Define what I want to achieve.
Don’t get all vague here. Really outline exactly what you want. You deserve it. Stay away from, “I want to get in shape”, “I want to make more money”, “I want a nicer car”.
In fact, a good sub question here is How will I know when I have achieved this goal. Be specific. I want to find a new job or start a business, in X field, making X money. I want to add 100 lbs. To my bench press, run a marathon, lose 40 lbs.
2. Why I want it?
What are you going to get from this? How is this going to enrich my life? Is there a secondary want there? Do you want to get shredded so you can meet a hot girl? Do you want to make money so you can have an awesome house? This step is important for two reasons. First it helps you flush out those other wants, that you ARE going to achieve this year. Also, it could help you realize that what you wanted isn’t what you wanted and you really want this. This step could save you a lot of work and a lot of time.
3. What assets do I already have that will help me get to this goal?
These assets come in the form of people you know like teachers, friends, family, mentors, colleagues? They are things you have like, a car, bus pass, money, an office, equipment. They are intangible things like, work ethic, skills, knowledge, stubbornness, drive and all those other personality traits you have that can be leveraged as an asset.
4. What assets do I need to acquire?
Same as above, but now you have to buy it, find it, learn it, practice it. This is also the part where you may seek professional help such as a life coach, business coach, personal trainer, hypnotist :) or whomever you need to get you to the lever you wish to be.
5. What mini goals do I need to achieve for this main goal?
If your goal is complex enough, there are probably things you will need to do to get it going. You may need to get funding. You may need a website. You may need to join a gym. Break these up into smaller goals. If you look at it as one gigantic goal, you may find it overwhelming. So think “best way to eat an elephant” in this step.
6. What habits do I need to change, adopt or toss out?
Large scale success isn’t instant. What habits do you have that are stabbing you in the back. If you can, think of one useful habit that would make this goal come just that much faster and welcome it into your life. Think of one goal that will completely sabotage your efforts and let it go.
7. Lastly will I accomplish this goal in its entirety?
This is the last step, yet one of the most important. The reason it is the last step is after you do all these other steps, you will have a much better idea of how long it may take. If you don’t do anything else, do steps 1 and 7. The difference between a goal and a dream is planning and a deadline. Without this step, it's not even really a goal.
