Now that "Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo in Detroit" has come to a close, what's next, you ask? The DIA presents "30 Americans," a dynamic showcase of contemporary art by African American artists, on view Oct. 18-Jan. 18, 2016. The exhibition looks at issues of racial, political, historical and gender identity in contemporary culture through more than 70 paintings, sculptures, installations, photographs and video created by many of the most important African American artists working over the past 30 years.
The works, which cover most major developments in contemporary art, explore the powerful influence of artistic legacy and cultural identity across generations. Among the artists represented are Kerry James Marshall, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Kara Walker, Nick Cave (whose work is currently on view in Cranbrook Art Museum's "Here Hear"), Kehinde Wiley, Carrie Mae Weems, Robert Colescott, Glen Ligon and Lorna Simpson.
