Notre Dame senior Sam Grewe lost his leg to osteosarcoma when he was 13 years old and spent two years undergoing chemotheraphy and treatments in hospitals. He saw first-hand the benefit physicians with a compassionate mindset have on patients, a practice Dominic Vachon, Director of the Hillebrand Center for Compassionate Care in Medicine at Notre Dame, is studying as well.
Since 2011, nearly 1,000 students including Sam, who is training for the Paralympic Tokyo Games and hopes to attend medical school, have taken the Center's courses designed to teach skills such as personalism, medical counseling and clinical ethics — the only undergraduates in the country receiving this kind of preparation.
