NATIONAL NAME YOUR CAR DAY National Name Your Car Day on October 2nd encourages a special commitment to your wheels. It’s time to give your trusty automobile what it really needs, a name. Many of you most likely remember Herbie the Love Bug, Lightning McQueen from Cars, Kit from Knight Rider, General Lee from The Dukes of Hazzard and Bandit from Smokey and the Bandit. These are just some of the famous car names that are known by millions of people. Make a day of it. Take the ol’ jalopy out for a spin, a nice wash, and shine and then just maybe you will select a signature meant for one so reliable. After all, you spend all that time together and take such good care of each other, isn’t it time to give those four wheels a name? HOW TO OBSERVE #NameYourCarDay Pick out a name for your car if you haven’t already. Use #NameYourCarDay to post on social media. Show pictures of you jalopy with that new name on a sign placard for all to see. Here’s Eleanor from the Movie Gone in 60 Seconds.

WORLD STROKE DAY World Stroke Day, on October 29th, seeks to emphasize the serious nature and high rates of stroke. The day is also observed to raise awareness of the prevention and treatment of strokes. According to previous statistics, one in six people were expected to have a stroke during their lifetime. Fifteen million people around the world have strokes each year. It’s also the leading cause of disability. A stroke may cause paralysis, sensory disturbances, aphasia, and emotional disturbances. Over 6 million people die as a result of a stroke. Throughout the world, stroke is the second leading cause of death. Additionally, current statistics suggest that the number of people expected to have a stroke has increased. Now, one in four people is likely to have a stroke. Early Warning Signs Knowing the early warning signs of stroke saves lives. Early symptoms of a stroke usually happen suddenly. These symptoms include: Numbness or weakness, especially on one side of the body Confusion or trouble talking Trouble seeing Dizziness or trouble walking Severe headache If you or a loved one is having any of these symptoms, it’s important to act F.A.S.T. F = Facial Weakness A = Arm Weakness S = Speech difficulty T = Time loss is brain loss. Call 911 when these symptoms are present. Don’t wait! Early warning signs of a stroke may disappear after a few minutes. However, the symptoms may still indicate a transient ischemic attack (TIA). Even if symptoms disappear, it’s important to receive medical attention right away. It’s important to know the symptoms of a stroke. Furthermore, it’s also important to know that strokes can be prevented. In fact, up to 90% of all strokes can be prevented by addressing certain risk factors. These risk factors include hypertension, diet, smoking, and exercise. Through an emphasis on prevention, the World Stroke Association hopes to cut the number of strokes in half by 2030. HOW TO OBSERVE #WorldStrokeDay Here are some ways to observe this day: Know your risk of having a stroke Attend an informational discussion on strokes at a local medical facility Take action to prevent a stroke by quitting smoking, changing your diet, and reducing hypertension Learn the early signs of stroke and how you should respond If you have experienced a stroke, share your survivor story with others Visit www.strokeassociation.org for more resources and use #WorldStrokeDay to share on social media. WORLD STROKE DAY HISTORY In the 1990s, the European Stroke Initiative had the idea to create a global awareness day for the strokes. Due to financial restrictions, the awareness day was limited to Europe only. The country celebrates its awareness day on May 10th. In 2004, a World Stroke Day was established at the World Stroke Congress in Vancouver. In 2006, Canadian clinical neuroscientist, Dr. Vladimir Hachinkski helped to incorporate a World Stroke Proclamation. During that time, the International Stroke Society merged with the World Stroke Federation. The result of this merger was the World Stroke Organization (WSO). Under the management of the WSO, the first official World Stroke Day was held on October 29th, 2006.

October 28th sets aside National First Responders Day to honor the men and women who act quickly when an emergency is at hand. First responders dedicate their lives to save lives. They are the people who run toward a crisis while the rest of the world flees. According to the Department of Homeland Security, 4.6 million career and volunteer first responders support the communities where they live. They are firefighters, police, emergency medical technicians (EMT), and paramedics. In an emergency, they’re the first on the scene. These dedicated professionals answer the call when a crisis arises, often putting their own lives on the line. Serving as a national day of gratitude, we pay tribute to their endless hours and around the clock service provided to their communities. As one of the most dangerous jobs in the country, the day also pays tribute to the fallen first responders. According to the CDC, 97 firefighters and 155 police officers die each year in the line of duty. Additionally, their rate of occupational injury is higher than the national average. Often, the very people saving lives are our neighbors, friends and family members. And their families know the price they pay for their dedication to the job. And even though they are an integral part of our communities, their sacrifices go beyond the hours they work. They face high stress, often daily. The trauma they see wears on them both mentally and physically. Many experience Post Traumatic Stress. Long periods away from family add stress to their relationships, too. National First Responders Day is also a call for action. First responders deserve our support. Through resources and awareness, first responders can live healthier more productive lives and pass their knowledge and skills on to the next generation of first responders, too. Share your appreciation on social media using #NationalFirstRespondersDay.

National Pharmacist Day on January 12th annually recognizes and honors all pharmacists across the nation. The role of pharmacists has shifted over the years. Where once they served as the classical “lick, stick and pour” dispensary, they now serve as an integrated member of the health care team. They’re directly involved in patient care and often play a vital role in a patient’s recovery. Pharmacists work long hours, usually standing the entire time. Along with dispensing pills and providing advice on medications, pharmacists also administer immunizations. Pharmacists who conduct research discover and test new medications, too. If you have a chance, thank your pharmacist today for their role in helping you with your health! #NationalPharmacistDay #thankapharmacist

We have several employees, both clinical staff and support staff who have served in our military. Keeping up with our Black History Month posts, we turn to this: On September 5, 1942, United States Navy Messman Charles Jackson French swam through the night for 6 - 8 hours pulling a raft of 15 wounded sailors with a rope around his stomach through shark infested waters. The U.S. Navy Ship the U.S.S. Gregory was hit by Japanese naval fire in the South Pacific. Many were wounded and killed. French successfully brought these men to safety on the shores of The Solomon Islands. French was the first black swimmer to earn the Navy Medal for his heroism in 1943. We remember Charles Jackson French and commemorate his heroism and incredible swimming to celebrate Black History Month. Thank you for your service and your valor, Mr. French. 💪🏾🌊
