Feeling nostalgic on a Saturday. Woolworth’s lunch counter, the Capitol theatre, Bill Beard Sporting Goods and good old Burgerville. Hope you head downtown today revisiting the past and enjoying the now. 💜❤️🌈
Besides everything pumpkin spice, Jack-o-lanterns and apple cider, October is also a busy time for artists. Inktober was created in 2009 as a daily series of art prompts throughout the month of October. This year we are encouraging folks to go a little closer to home with Runaway Art and Craft Studio Christy, Kiah and her crew have come up with a great Drawtober list of awesome ideas to play with. Any media is welcome, and it’s fun to post your creations on their IG #drawtober2020runaway . If you have any questions, shoot them a DM. It’s all for fun and to challenge yourself. And if you need any art supplies, we have lots of sketchbooks, pens, pencils-as well as Runaway Art. So make a big punkin latte and start sketching!!! 🎃🦇🍁🕸

And we love the fox and the lantern card soooo much!!! Spooky season is here! 💀🕸🦇

Decided to start the week off with a bit of inspiring creativity: Mail art! Not only do these artists gift their recipients with a bit of joy, fun and beauty arriving at their home, but they are also supporting the postal service. If you are looking for something fun to do, it’s as simple as an grabbing an envelope, some stamps and a nice pen. Send someone a surprise!

Marlene Dietrich once said, “It's the friends you can call up at 4 a.m. that matter.” So true. If you are lucky enough to have one of those 4 a.m. friends, instead of a text or a call, a sweet card through the snail mail will show you how much you appreciate them, especially during this time of social distancing. We really love the sweet Cally Jane cards from our friends @calypsocards . Also featured are cards from @shannonmartindesign @notesandqueries and Leanin’ Tree. ❤️🌈💜

Yeah, we are going a little overboard with promoting our window. But it’s overcast this morning, so it’s easier to see the little twinkly lights! (And play the Twilight Zone theme in our heads.) So, no apologies. 🙃😁💜

Hi! Big event this weekend! Our friends at @freefridgesalem are having an auction on Instagram: @freefridgesalemauction . So many wonderful things have been donated from local artists, restaurants, bakeries and small businesses. Beignets! Tattoos! Air plants! Embroidery kits! Ice cream! Trampoline time! Hot sauce! CINNAMON ROLLS!!!! And all the $ raised is going directly to feed our unsheltered neighbors, thanks to the community angels at Freefridgesalem. Thanks for checking it out. (Oh, did I mention there is a bread basket? AND PIE?!!) 🥧💕
We just got some new Shannon Martin cards in! We have carried this line for a long time, and have never tired of their wry wit, fun vintage photos and sweet-but not saccharine-sentiments. You can never go wrong with sending one of their cards!

We sell paper, therefore, it stands to reason we love m is a perfect drizzly, spooky day to start decorating the house with your kiddos. We love how simple these ideas all are: scrap paper, glue sticks, paper plates, a little paint, crayons, and googly eyes, and you’re set for some Haunting! (Not to mention the kid craft staple: the incredible, versatile TP roll!) We confess to really want to make some egg carton bats and a Dracula Charmin castle!

We have sold adult coloring books for a long time, before it was trendy. And while it may seem frivolous to some, there is something deeply soul satisfying about settling down for an hour with some colored pencils, a glass of wine and relaxing music and getting in touch with your right brain. Dover’s Creative Haven line of books are only a few dollars, but priceless in the satisfaction and fun you can have. Look at some of these amazing samples! And we beg you not to feel intimidated-everyone starts at square one, and there are loads of tutorials available online. With the cooler weather coming on, we urge you to get cozy, play with some pencils and de-stress yourself! 🌈

It’s a cool crisp morning, and that makes us think of cozy things: a warm cup of coffee, a snuggly blanket, an Agatha Christie mystery and some cute and comfy socks. We just got some new designs in from @karmagifts, featuring roly poly hedgehogs, mermaids, koalas, chickens, kitties and coffee cups. Come and get your hygge on! (Which is a Danish term for: a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being. We are all about that.)
It’s a perfect Octobery morning here downtown. The slightly overcast sky makes the fall colors pop, the air is cool and there are crunchy leaves on the ground. We think State street looks especially sweet and cozy. C’mon down for a bite to eat, get something warm and pumpkin spicy to sip on and explore the wonderful nooks and crannies. 🍁☕️
So yesterday, we featured some terrible costume fails-and again, apologies for half naked pumpkin dude. Today we want to celebrate the folks who get an “A” for effort in creativity and serious costuming skills. The tiny Edward Scissorhands!💜The “Up” kids! Peter Pan AND his shadow! That incredible Rocket Raccoon outfit!!!😲(And that kid that is Pennywise is seriously scary.) We also love a terrible pun, so applause to Jon Snow White. 🤣 Enjoy! 🎃💀👻

Halloween is obviously going to be different this year-but hey, we now have ample time to plan next year’s costumes. And also show you some hilarious examples of really bad costume choices. Look-we give HUGE credit to anybody that is brave enough to put on a silly wig, smear on some make up and fake blood, but some folks need to step up their game. The parents that put their kid in a paper bag? C’mon! And half naked pumpkin dude-no. Just no. 😳🤣

Creepy and kooky, mysterious and spooky, yes it’s a good time to celebrate the Addams Family. With the tv show, movies and cartoons, many have forgotten that it all started with a man named Charles Addams, the founding father of American Gothic. A genius who channeled a very dark, yet sweet sense of humor, Addams published 1300 cartoons in his lifetime, the bulk of which were in the New Yorker magazine. In 1937 he published the first of a series of cartoons featuring the goings on of a creepy, yet cheerful family. They were unnamed until the 60’s, when the Addams Family tv show first appeared. Addams finally named all the characters: the dashing Gomez, the darkly alluring Mortician, servant Lurch, the crazed Uncle Fester and the children: son Pugsly and our idol, Wednesday. Here’s a taste, and we hope it encourages you to look up some of Addams other work-it’s altogether ooky! 💀🦇🎃🕸
Pumpkin carving has certainly come a long way! Current efforts are a far cry from the simple faces carved in turnips and potatoes in old Ireland. We think the spirit of Jack O’ the Lantern would be mightily pleased with all this creativity. Hope this inspires you in your punkin carving efforts! 🎃🧡

We are so very lucky to be in such a supportive and vibrant downtown. There are businesses here that really keep an eye out for each other, and go above and beyond for Salem. When the fires hit, so many stood up: looking at you @epiloguekitchen @kings.kitchen.86 @archivecoffeeandbar @blastoffvintage and so many others. Which is why the upcoming event will wrap everyone in a cozy, big, beautiful (and safely socially distant) hug. Stay tuned, Salem! 🍁🍂🧡

Something wonderful and cozy is about to happen in downtown Salem! Details coming soon! Prepare to bundle up for some fun! Go to the hashtag #downsalemcozywalk2020 on Instagram for updates and info. We are sooo excited! 🍁🍂
We love these guys. They have some serious chutzpah. For one thing, they opened, as they say “during a freaking pandemic.” That takes real meatballs. They are also REALLY serious about sandwiches-I mean, look at this thing! 😲Check out their online menu for wonders like the Pastrami from Miami, the Mostly A Cubango and (lol) the Boojie Bologna pictured here. They are located on 315 High St. NE in the Pringle Plaza. Order online at valiantthesandwich@gmail.com, or call 503-689-1821, as well as Valiant the Sandwich 😋💜😍
As many of you know, Governor Kate has ordered a two week freeze, starting November 18th. Our doors will still be open, and we will make every effort to make your visit safe. We require masks, and we have a hand sanitizing station, and we regularly clean frequently used surfaces. If you are exercising caution, we do curbside and home delivery. Our website is www.cookestationery.com, and you can call us at 503-581-1404. Thank you for being such great customers. We have been proud to have been part of this community for over 85 years. ❤️

It has been our privilege to be next door neighbors to Wild Pear Restaurant & Catering for twenty years. They say that food served with love is the best kind, and the Ritter family and staff proves this time and again. If you have enjoyed their signature pho soup, those wonderful white truffle sweet potato fries, or a heavenly slice of key lime pie, treat yourself this week to some take out. They are also offering a Thanksgiving dinner to go, which includes turkey with shallot gravy, cranberry orange relish, and Italian sausage and mushroom dressing! 😋Not to mention the pumpkin cheesecake!😲 You can place orders online at Jeremy@WildPearCatering. com or call 503-378-7515. We love you, neighbors. ❤️🍁🍂
Hey Salem. This has been an unbelievably tough year for all of us. But it has also been really inspiring, as we have witnessed so much kindness and community spirit. We have been especially touched by the selflessness of our downtown restaurants. They feed the unsheltered, our health care workers, and during the recent tragic fires, made meals for folks who had been displaced, first responders and volunteers. Now we are going to ask you to repay their generosity with some of your own. The #downtownsalemcozywalk2020 was started in part because we were worried about our restaurants losing outdoor seating due to cold weather. Now with the current COVID pause, they are only allowed to provide take out. Please help them get through the next couple of weeks. It doesn’t have to be much: a sandwich, a cup of coffee, a donut. But if we all pull together, we can help these hardworking, kind people through a rough patch. We are so honored to be their neighbors and part of this community. Don’t let them down, Salem! Please share this post!
We have some wonderfully cozy autumn themed cards from a couple of our favorite companies @notesandqueries, Grasshopper Press and Firefly. There are cosmic foxes, cups of tea, mystical crows and sleepy kitties. Perfect for writing a thoughtful note while sipping a mocha latte. 🍁🍂❤️
Has someone on Christmas card list been extra nice this year? You should send them one of these stunning 3D pop up cards from Me & McQ and Alljoy Designs. The detail in these is simply fabulous, and they will not only serve as a greeting, but a treasured decoration for years to come. Surprisingly inexpensive, considering all the teeny parts: prices range from $7.25 to $10.24 each! 🎄
So, how lucky are we to be right between two great Salem restaurants? We love Taproot Lounge & Cafe Topher and his crew have created a beautiful, warm and yes, “hip” space for great food, drinks and community. They are now open for take out, Monday through Sunday, 11 am to 10pm. So if you are craving some breakfast tacos, a desert bowl or some of those amazing flash fried Brussels sprouts, call them at 503- 363-7668!
Hey neighbors! We are still open for business, and we would love to help yours. If you have any take out menus, we can hand them to interested customers, who maybe want to grab some breakfast, lunch or dinner. We will also post your menus in our windows. Same goes with our retail friends-people love a coupon! We love you and our downtown, and we can get through this together. 💜

Hey Salem! The freeze starts today, but we are still open for business, so c’mon in! We will of course be observing all COVID protocols: masks and social distancing are required, and we are diligent about sanitizing the store. There is a Purell hand sanitizing available for our customers, and we will be very careful about overcrowding. We believe that if we take these steps, we can keep everyone safe and lower the curve. We also do home delivery and curbside delivery, as well as mail order. DM us, or call 503-581-1404 or email at www.cookestationery.com . We thank you for your continued support, and supporting our downtown. ❤️🍁🍂
One of the big perks of working at a stationery store is picking out the greeting cards. This year for Christmas cards, the choice was pretty difficult- @notesandqueries had so many exceptional designs: stargazing bunnies, snuggling critters, friendly foxes and silly penguins. There is still more to show, so stay tuned!
Epilogue Kitchen and Cocktails has not only brought fine dining to our downtown, but they also are selfless community leaders and helpers. They are what good neighbors are all about, and a great example of combining business with love and compassion, as well as standing up for what is right. Show them support by getting some take out or buying a gift card. It shouldn’t be hard, ‘cuz look at all this scrumptious food! Crab cakes! Pierogies! The Smash Burger! They are located at 130 High Street downtown. Call 503-581-1880 for orders, or message them on FB. 🥰
Hey! It’s Small Business Saturday! We know that times are tough, but if you are doing a little holiday shopping, we ask you to please, please, please shop small and local. We have been so touched by all your support during the pandemic, it has helped our small businesses hang in there. Independent biz had made our city the fun, vibrant place it is. Hope to see you downtown! ☺️💜
Just a reminder, folks-the Downtown Salem Cozy Walk is still going strong. While you are doing your holiday shopping, you can support local business and get a thank you in return! Thanksgiving is a holiday that holds many happy memories, and is steeped in nostalgia. However, there was a period in time when American cuisine was truly a horror show. That people cheerfully served this back in the day is kind of mind boggling. If you were a picky eater back then, we don’t blame you one bit! So goggle at the jello molds and be very grateful you are having a simple sweet potato and slice of pumpkin pie. Happy Thanksgiving, Salem! 🦃🥧
It’s the day before Thanksgiving, and we would like to emphasize the “giving” part for a minute. This year has been tough on everyone, but for many neighbors, it’s been brutal. Please consider donating to some of the wonderful helpers in our community. @freefridgesalem is looking for non perishable food, hygiene products, socks, scarves and underwear. We are a drop off site, but since we will be closed over the holiday weekend, you can still donate @salemcarousel @acrossthestreetsalem and @isaacsdowntown . There is also the heroes @marionpolkfoodshare , @unitedwaymwv and @familybuildingblocks . We are constantly amazed by the community spirit in our town, and we are thankful to be your neighbors. Mr. Rogers would be proud! ❤️

So our friends and neighbors @epiloguekitchen have been targeted and threatened again by hate groups. We can’t imagine how hard and scary this has been for them, in these hard and trying times. Black owned businesses are so very vulnerable. Please shower them with love, speak out and email the city council and SPD to start paying attention and deal with this. It breaks our hearts, but we also have incredible faith in the strength of our Salem community. If we watch out for each other and take care of each other, we can get through this. Ah, parents. In the quest for the perfect Christmas photo to send to friends and family, there is a trail of disappointment, tears and snot. Because, toddlers. And who can blame ‘em? Suddenly strapped into shiny shoes, tights and bows, and plopped on a strange man’s lap with a big white beard, well, we’d have a tantrum too. Experience the Schadenfreude of broken Christmas dreams...
We have all had made the same mistake when we hear a song and sing to the words you think you’re hearing but you’re not. Sometimes this is apparent such as thinking that Bennie had electric boobs in “Bennie and the Jets,” other times, not so much. This term is known as a mondegreen, created by American writer Sylvia Wright in 1954. It was inspired by a misinterpretation of a 17th century Scottish ballad called “The Bonnie Earl o Moray” in which she writes: “When I was a child, my mother used to read aloud to me from Percy’s Reliques, and one of my favorite poems began, as I remember: Ye Highlands and ye Lowlands, Oh, where hae ye been? They hae slain the Earl o’ Moray, And Lady Mondegreen.” The fourth line was actually, “and laid him on the green,” so we don’t have to worry about Lady Mondegreen being murdered with the Earl of Moray or a double homicide. Lyrics of Christmas carols continue to be murdered, because honestly, the real lyrics are weird to our modern ears. Figgy pudding? Bob tailed nag? Orient are? Enjoy and tell us your favorite mondegreen! Sleep in Heavenly Peas!!!

Sunday Funnies! Just found this #lookalikechallenge with dogs, and well, can’t stop laughing. We especially love Harrison Ford. Enjoy and have a lovely Sunday! ❤️
For a supposedly conservative era, mid century Christmas trees certainly got, well, pretty darned wild. The 50’s and 60’s were a time of eye blasting color, flicking and shiny aluminum. Feast your eyes on these awesome and somewhat questionable Yule-a-Go-Gos!
Wishing you a lovely, magical holiday, Salem. Deeply grateful for all our blessings and our wonderful community. Be safe, and spread love, kindness and good cheer. 🎄
We want to wish you a warm, safe and happy Christmas Eve, Salem. It’s been a very tough time, but there are so many things to be grateful for as well. Thanks to all the folks who have been Santas the entire year, helping the community with their big hearts, kindness and loving spirit. And here’s hoping that we hear some sleigh bells tonight. ❤️🎅🎄
Funnies! We decided to start off the first Sunday of the year with a bang, and feature some truly awesome, truly awful album covers. And we confess we would give ANYTHING to hear the pirate metal stylings of Victory, the heart felt musings of singer songwriter Gary McVay, ABBA flavored Nordic pop from the Pelles, and whatever Red Shoe Truckin’ is. We also seriously wanna party with Captain Sky. We love you, man. 😘
While we are wishing that 2021 started on a better note, we are deeply worried about our friends and neighbors Epilogue Kitchen and Cocktails. They were singled out again with protests, and while no one was hurt, it is still very scary. We love you, Salem.
Happy New Year. So glad to see you, 2021! With that in mind, we have some great suggestions for resolutions for the coming year. 😉

Look at this beauty! This is a Remington Quiet Riter, a midcentury portable typewriter that started being made in 1952. There was a time when half our store’s business revolves around these machines, so it pleases us to offer one of these gems for sale. It comes with the original case, and has been cleaned and refurbished by our friends at Pacific Typewriter. We love the green keys! Just an FYI, if you have an old typewriter that needs cleaning or fixing, we are a drop off depot for Pacific Typewriter, which is based in Portland. No big secret: we love journals, and we have taken great joy in watch the popularity of the bujo or bullet journal unfold. It is simply a dot grid journal that folks use for planning and note taking, and you can make it as simple or as elaborate as you want. We love the Saturday Market, the wisteria in the downtown alleys, and the fact that you can find a coffee shop every third block. We love your old neighborhoods and food truck pods. We love seeing Mt. Hood and Mt. Jefferson on a clear day and the sunset on the Willamette. Yeah, we love you big time, along with the all the warts and the sadness and a dark, violent history along with the light. It’s not a perfect place. It never has been. But we believe in our hearts that it could be. Love you, Salem. ❤️
Yesterday was a good day, thanks to @epiloguekitchen and @105.5themoon. It was a fitting celebration of the life and legacy of Dr. King, full of hope and community spirit. Thank you so much. We will try to carry this forward not just one day, but every day.💜Also check out the articles on Epilogue at @statesmanjournal and the @washingtonpost 😮!!! Thank you too, to all the folks that donated to @freefridgesalem! That gave us such joy.
COOKESTATIONERY.COM Bring in the New Year with New Customers
Words of great wisdom from a great man. Tune into @105.5themoon today at noon to listen to Dr. King’s “I Have A Dream” speech and “Letters From A Birmingham Jail”. Our wonderful neighbors @epiloguekitchen will be serving 200 free meals (they continue to be incredibly awesome) at 11 am on a first come first serve basis. We love you, Salem. 🌈💜

Sunday Funnies: All photographers will tell you that along with talent and skill, there is also an element of luck. Here are some fun examples of folks being at the right place at the right time. Also: cats. You mad, furry geniuses. 🐈❤️

Hey friends! Want to support a good cause? Like cool stickers? Then we have a deal for you! At our front counter, you can pick up a sticker promoting the folks @freefridgesalem for a $3.00 donation. Btw, we are also a drop off site for non perishable food, hygiene items, socks other things.💜🥰

Sunday Funnies: Okay. After this we’re done, but honestly, the #berniemittens memes are the most joyous and silly things we have seen in a long time. And these are wonderful. Bernie goes on the Great British Baking Show, the Price Is Right, hangs out with the Fellowship of the Ring, and goes for a spin in the teacups. FYI, you can get some Bernie merch at our friends over @thefreckledbeeco. Keep shining on, you crazy diamonds. 💎💙
Feeling nostalgic on a Saturday. We just have a deep fondness for old neon signs, with the promise of a night at the movies, a swanky cocktail or a 99 cent cheeseburger. They just say Saturday night. 🥰❤️
Vermont Senator Bernie Saunders and his wonderfully practical mittens have taken the interwebs by storm. And we can’t stop laughing, which feels pretty good. So enjoy Bernie’s adventures with the Mandalorian, eating cheesecake with Dorothy, Blanche, Rose and Sophia, having a White Russian with the Dude, and hangin’ Silent Bob and Jay. And whoever put Bernie in the Nighthawks painting: genius. We also see that Bernie has been sighted in Salem. 😁💕
The calendar says Monday, but our body says it’s still Sunday. Snap out of it (or at least pretend to) by heading to one or more of Salem’s finest purveyors of caffeine! @thegovcup @bentleyscoffee @northblockcoffee @thehumanbeansalem @easyotter @archivecoffeeandbar @isaacsdowntown @brotherhoodcoffeeor

Sunday Funnies: There are some awesome graphics out there...but there are also times that the designers did not think things through. Ah, the perils of a sliding door. 🙃🤣😁
It’s true. Proofreaders ( and punctuation) can save the world, one sign and one menu at a time. Happy Saturday! 🤣😅😂
We love Fridays, and we are also madly in love with this album cover. And we have so. Many. Questions. What does Polka-A-Go-Go actually sound like? Is Lil’ Wally an early influencer to Lil’ Wayne and Lil’ Nas X? Where can you get leopard spotted bikinis with tassels? Who is Lil’ Wally on the phone with and where is his accordion? Anyways, this whole thing says Friday to us, in least in our heads. Get your cha-cha boot on and Boom-Shakalaka, Salem!

Sunday Funnies: One has to wonder about the history of some place names. Our best guess is that folks just got bored with names like “Elmwood” and “Main Street” and decided to really jazz it up, or at least tick off the more conservative people in the area. Applause, for example, to the person that coined the name Titwobble Lane. And OMG. Fabulous Texan Way wins everything. ✨🌈🤣
This gives us great joy! The ever resourceful and resilient folks of New Orleans rallied together when all the Marci Gras parades were cancelled due to COVID. The Krewe of House Floats was born, (Grand Marshal Big Freedia! 💜) and all the artists that normally work on floats were hired to decorate houses instead. The result is magical. You can check out decor on the @kreweofhousefloats IG and Facebook accounts. (We want the dinosaur with the top hat in our front yard!) Laissez les bons temps rouler!
Friday, Friyay! So here’s where that art history degree comes in handy: making silly memes. Have a great Friday, Salem! 😁 🖼

Kawaii alert! What is it about super cute things that gives us 💕🌈✨? We have happy erasers, kitty and doggo pens, owl pencil sharpeners, 3mm grid notebooks (the squares are SO. TINY!) and a really awesome maneki neko embroidered journal. Get all your rainbow and sparkle feels at Cookes! 🦄 ☀️
We love history, since we are sort of historical ourselves. 😉 Looking at office space throughout the decades is particularly fascinating, from the bustle wearing ladies in the 1880s, to the pretty groovy interiors of the 70s. (Seriously. That carpet is awesome.) But no matter what the decade, there was always probably a Bill Lumbergh type boss. “Ah, ah, I almost forgot... I'm also going to need you to go ahead and come in on Sunday, too. We, uhhh, lost some people this week and we sorta need to play catch-up. Mmmmmkay? Thaaaaaanks.”

Hey, Journaling Tribe! We just got a shipment in from our friends @studiooh and there are some great selections to satisfy your scribbling urges. Wily foxes, lovely florals, sweet giraffes and sleepy animals adorn the covers. A number of these are deconstructed-no spine- so the book lays flat for easier writing. Some of the designs have both tabs and pockets. We are really thrilled with brand new composition books, which come in a two pack. Come in to check them out! 📚
Wow, you guys. Wow. We are SO touched by the outpouring of kindness and compassion. @epiloguekitchen rapid fundraiser went over and above their original $3500 request: in 24 hours you folks donated $15,000!!! That is remarkable, and shows what kind of awesome folks live here. So, thanks to Jonathan and Maura, as well as @archivecoffeeandbar @thefreckledbeeco @uncletroysbbq @isaacsdowntown @kings.kitchen.86 ,our unsheltered neighbors will receive a care package of: -waterproof overboots -wool socks -toe warmers - a headlamp -sanitary wipes The rest of the money raised will go to @freefridgesalem who supply folks with food and other necessities in our community. As far as we know, you can still donate in person at Epilogue, or on their Venmo account. Mr. Rogers is smiling down at all of you right now!
We love our community. If you or someone you know is still without power, here are some places you can warm up. Also go to the Marion County website for useful info in regards to help with yard debris or other assistance. 💜
This kinda sums our attitude right now. Come and visit us downtown for a little cheering up! You can browse our WARM aisles, grab some hot coffee and delicious food at our neighboring restaurants. We are happy to hear about power outage stories, as we have a few of our own. ❄️

Since we have all been pretty cold and uncomfortable, it has also been a blessing: because we know sooner or later the heat will come back on. However, there are folks in the community that are not that lucky. Thanks to @freefridgesalem and @salem_community_cupboards there is help out there. We are a drop off site for Free Fridge Salem, and here’s a list of all the dry pantries around town. You can also go to the Free Fridge Salem IG site and find lots of info and a map in their bio. You can make donations to pantries directly, but please: non perishable and non expired food, as well as clean usable clothing. Also consider @marionpolkfoodshare @salemharvest @unitedwaymwv for donations. We know this community has a big, generous heart, and even a small donation will go a long way. Thanks, Salem. (Please share this post!)
No, we are not selling magical scrying stones or crystal balls. (Although that would be totally cool!) These are Magnabrite magnifiers, and they are awesome. Made of acrylic, these actually gather light for prefocused 4x magnification. Perfect for studying maps, stamps and coins, photos and printed text. They come in three sizes, and prices range from $15.95 to $51.95. They are included in our large selection of magnifiers. 😊
Did you know that Cookes has an honest to goodness mascot? He possibly dates back to the 1940s, and his name is “Mr. Stationer”! He’s a very happy and dapper gent, with paper clip legs, rubber band arms and a pencil for a body. But very few people realize his head- with it’s distinctive Mohawk- is a typewriter eraser. Anyways, Mr. S has been repping for us for decades, and we are proud of him. As he says, “Look to Cooke!”
If you have been following us for awhile, you know we love coffee. And local coffee shops. And baristas. We also love art, and when two of our favorite things are combined, it’s pure happiness. Prepare to be dazzled by some masters of steamed milk and cappuccinos! (Makes you want to get a latte, huh? From our amazing local coffee shops, right?) ☕️❤️
Sunday Funnies: Toddlers. They have a logic all their own. And sometimes epic meltdowns are also pretty hilarious. Parents, you have our sympathies, and we thank you for recording these moments of ridiculous high drama. (Also, the looks on RDJ and Obama’s faces.) 😁😆

We love this card line. @shannonmartindesign cards are sweet, warm and sassy, funny without being mean spirited. Shannon Martin, “Girl Designer”, uses old family snapshots combined with witty sayings for a perfect card to send to someone special. 🥰❤️🌈
We have no shame and no regrets. We love bad puns and dad jokes. What better way to start a Monday? (And a salute to all the Vanilla Ice fans out there.😉🤣)
Sunday Funnies! While it’s not really cool to laugh at another’s misfortune, well it’s sometimes hard not to chuckle. Enjoy a bit of schadenfreude.
In celebration of our local restaurants being open for dining, we decided to celebrate by featuring some of our favorite, old timey things: wacky diners and food stands. Hot dog shaped hot dog stands? Giant pineapples? Gargantuan donuts? Frank-N-Stein, btw, is the best!
By dine in, we mean dining in an actual restaurant! Woohoo! Today is the day that our restaurants are open for limited seating inside! It’s been such a struggle, and we have been rooting for our neighbors as they have risen to deal with myriad challenges: the pandemic, the fires and the recent ice storm. We thank anyone that has ordered takeout or dined outdoors, and the following weeks will allow you to show continued support. We hope to see you downtown grabbing some delish eats and drinks, bantering with the wait staff and leaving big tips. 😉Check out to see if your fave eatery is going to be open for business soon. Happy day, Salem! 🎉🌈
One thing we have learned in long years in retail is that tiny things have a real appeal. Itsy bitsy pens, notebooks, staplers, tags-there is something endearing about them. I mean, those teeny binder clips! 🥰 Anyways, we have lots of adorable office supplies to make you happy.💖💙💖
It’s Monday, and we want you to start your week with a smile and some joy in your heart. Be safe, be happy and drop in to see us! 🥰❤️
Sunday Funnies!: Congrats to these photographers who got some amazing, once in a lifetime shots! Hope this makes your weekend a little bit happier. (Also, the parents of the kid reading William Peter Blattey? I be concerned.😳)
Anyone out there with green thumbs? We are thrilled to team up with @sprout_a_communitygrowingspace as a seed donation site. Sprout is asking for spare veggie seeds for community gardens. You can just drop them off in our @freefridgesalem drop box. Deadline is March 10th. During WW2, folks created Victory Gardens to ensure food security: we need that now more than ever. We find inspiration from activist Ron Finley who transformed his LA home into an edible wonderland. We are excited to help out, being gardeners ourselves. 🌱🌱🌱🍅
We are so very proud of some really special folks who are working hard to make our community a better one. Congratulations to @freefridgesalem for putting up their first ever dry pantry/fridge combo! 😁🌈🎉They have also started a much needed drive for diabetic supplies-please check out their stories and @fiberandblood for more info on this much needed effort. Applause to @epiloguekitchen and everyone who donated and volunteered to bring cold weather gear to our unsheltered neighbors. This was so amazing! We are also very excited about a new kid in town: @sprout_a_communitygrowingspace. If you have a green thumb, head over to their IG account. Speaking of good folks, we also want to thank the tireless people @marionpolkfoodshare @salemharvest @familybuildingblocks and @unitedwaymwv . We are so blessed, neighbors! 💖 (Btw, we are still a drop off donation site for Free Fridge Salem.)
We have a special guest in our front window: Sasquatch! And unlike the creature of legend, turns out that Sasquatch is pretty hip. Our theme is “ Small Business Is No Myth”, and along with Bigfoot, we are also featuring a few of our downtown friends and neighbors in our woods: Taproot Lounge & Cafe , Epilogue Kitchen and Cocktails Fork Forty Food Hall and @salemontheedge. (We also have @thefreckledbeeco and @wild pear restaurant hidden somewhere!😊) Come down to check out Squatch and friends, and visit some of our small businesses downtown! 🌲🌲🌲

Hey it’s Friday! We hope you are planning on putting on your most sparkly outfit and roller discoing the night away. (And it’s also cool if it’s just pizza and Netflix.) Have a lovely weekend! 💜🌈
Just an FYI, we have a of disinfecting and cleaning products in stock! Right now we are running a great price on Lysol wipes: a carton of six 80 packs for $37.50. That’s over $22.00 in savings. We also have Purell hand sanitizer, Clorox wipes, Lysol spray, a wide range of antibacterial soap, masks and gloves. We feel so encouraged by the slow reopening of our businesses and schools, but we want to make sure it is done in the right way. Every little effort helps. Stay safe and healthy, Salem! 💛
We have a whole slew of @moleskine journals back in stock! From pocket sized to extra large, these popular journals come lined, plain, squared or dotted, and we carry both hard and soft cover. Perfect for daily diary, notes, doodles, sketches, and as these incredible artists prove, visual delights! If you are feeling inspired, come down and grab a fresh Moleskine to get your creative juices flowing!
We love journals. We love art. We love handwriting. When something combines all three, it’s a heady, inspiring experience. Jose Naranja’s travel journals are exquisite jewels, full of precise notes, beautiful illustrations and whimsy. They are a joy, and we are fortunate that he shares them on social media. An aeronautic engineer by trade, Jose discovered Moleskine pocket journals, and recorded his many travels. Now he hand makes his own. Incredibly, this talented soul never had an art lesson. 😲!Head to his insta account, @jose_naranja to admire and be inspired! 🥰❤️

Friday Follies Time! We have to say, that while we love Alanis Morrisette, the whole “Isn’t It Ironic” song does not give any examples of real irony. Rain on your wedding day? How about a literal Dominos pizza incident? Happy Friyay, Salem! 🤣🌈❤️
We have had a hard time getting it together today, so we decided to look for inspiration. We ended up with Robert Benchley, who was more known for his wit than his work ethic. If you are not familiar with this gentleman, you should be. One of the great humorists of the 20th century, Benchley hung out at the legendary Algonquin with the likes of Dorothy Parker and Alexander Wollcott. He wrote for newspapers and magazines, was in movies and on the radio, and won an Academy Award for a short film. If you like your humor dry, like one of his most famous quotes : “Why don't you get out of that wet coat and into a dry martini?”, Benchley is your guy. (And a martini may help our day go better...)
Happy Monday, Salemanders! To get a smile on your face at the start of this week, here are some doggos in cars to give you joy. We can’t think of better buddies to take a trip to the park or hit the drive-thru with. 🐶❤️🐶❤️🐶

We here at Cookes are shameless coffee lovers, aka, the Beverage of the Gods. We also believe that coffee shops and those that work there deserve massive praise and Real. Tips. And while there is nothing wrong with a somewhat complicated coffee order, these examples here make our insides shrivel. We think Seinfeld said that “people are weird”, and yup. (And baristas! If you can top any of these orders, please share.)
We just got a new bunch of greeting cards in from our friends Oatmeal Studios. There are doomed daisies, lazy cats, visiting aliens and exercising pirates. They are perfect, goofy greetings to send to someone who could use a laugh. (And we always can use a laugh.😉❤️)
Hey, Salem! We are so honored and excited to have been nominated for two categories in the 2021 Best of the Willamette Valley awards. We have been nominated as “Best Downtown Salem Shop” and “Best Specialty Shop in the Willamette Valley”. Holy Smokes! 😲 We are incredibly surprised and grateful. Voting begins on April 5th at 12 noon and ends on April 23rd at 5pm PST. We will give you future details in later posts. Thank you so much for the nominations, and congrats to all the other nominees! You have channeled our inner Sally Field. 🌈🥰❤️
Sunday Funnies! We applaud these witty business owners, who have decided that life is too important to take seriously. The cheese store? We would be customers for life. We also want one of those incredibly awesome charge card signs for our store. 🤣😂😅 Have a great rest of the weekend, Salem! 🌈❤️
Congratulations to our neighbors Epilogue Kitchen and Cocktails, celebrating their second anniversary today! Not only have they brought delicious food to our downtown, but they have inspired us SO MUCH much in their deep commitment in helping our community, as well as standing up for what is right. They have never shied away from controversy, even though it has really cost them. We are privileged to have them downtown, and grateful for all they have done: feeding folks during numerous crises, raising an amazing amount of money for our unsheltered neighbors, and educating people about social justice. Show ‘em some serious love this weekend, Salem! We are so lucky to have them. (And no, squirrels and mice don’t really hang out there. This is an tribute from our store window. But it’s still a magical place! With perogies.) Kitchen celebrating their second anniversary today!
