Our client, James Stewart, was severely injured at the Ross County Jail when an officer slammed him to the ground, breaking his neck. Thankfully, the incident was caught on video. It showed excessive force, plain and simple. The Ross County Sheriff could have stepped up and appropriately disciplined the deputy, but he didn’t. It left Jim Stewart and his family feeling hopeless. Ben Cooper worked on the Stewarts’ behalf to investigate the case and advocate with Ross County and the Ross County Sheriff. He prepared to file a lawsuit, if necessary, to make the County and Sheriff take responsibility. We’re pleased to announce that the family and County have reached a settlement. We are proud to help Mr. Stewart seek the justice he deserves. We are also confident that this settlement will help prevent future excessive force incidents at the Ross County Jail. https://abc6onyourside.com/news/local/abc-6-digging-deeper-into-video-showing-ross-county-deputy-take-down-man-after-arrest ABC6ONYOURSIDE.COM Family wants answers after video shows deputy slamming man to the Ross County Jail floor

The practice of hazing and initiation is deeply rooted in our culture and because of this, hazing perpetrators often believe their actions have no consequences. Thankfully, through litigation, victims and their families have an avenue to get justice. https://www.cooperelliott.com/blog/the-importance-of-seeking-legal-representation-for-hazing-incidents/ COOPERELLIOTT.COM The Importance of Seeking Legal Representation for Hazing Incidents - Cooper & Elliott
In 2018, a Japanese cryptocurrency exchange called Zaif was hacked. The hackers stole $60 million dollars’ worth of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. At the time, Binance, one of the world’s largest cryptocurrency exchanges, allowed users to anonymously deposit and withdraw up to 2 Bitcoin every 24 hours. The hackers leveraged this policy to launder more than $9 million of the stolen Bitcoin through small anonymous transactions. What’s worse, when Binance was alerted about the criminal activity, it failed to freeze the transactions in question. Now, Chip and Ben Cooper are working to hold Binance accountable for its complicity. The case was just filed in a federal court in California.

In the Spring of 2019, Tyler Perino was a freshman at Miami University in Oxford, Ohio. Tyler accepted a bid to become a pledge of the Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. The older members of the fraternity began hazing him and the other pledges almost immediately and it culminated in a March 2019 “Big-Little Night” where Tyler was beaten repeatedly with a paddle and coerced into drinking dangerously large amounts of alcohol. Sean Alto and Cooper Elliott are working to get justice for Tyler and have filed a lawsuit in Butler County, Ohio. Ohio expanded its wrongful conviction compensation law, creating hope for those who’ve been exonerated but not compensated. Our clients, Jenny Wilcox (Heath) and Bobby Aldridge spent eleven years in prison for crimes they didn’t commit. 24 years after their exoneration, we helped them file wrongful conviction claims and seek compensation for the derailment of their lives. With the help of Brady, Cooper Elliott successfully sued Cabela's in a wrongful death lawsuit over the illegal sale of a black powder revolver to a violent convicted felon. As a result of the litigation, Cabela’s and its parent company enacted sweeping policy changes. Gun policy is a much-debated subject. But all can agree that we must keep deadly weapons out of the hands of violent convicted felons. Cooper Elliott, Brady, and Gerri Galliher have done just that by holding Cabela’s accountable. https://www.cooperelliott.com/blog/cooper-elliott-partners-with-the-brady-center-leading-to-sweeping-policy-changes-for-a-major-gun-retailer/ COOPERELLIOTT.COM Cooper Elliott Partners with the Brady Center, Leading to Sweeping Policy Changes for a Major Gun Retailer. | Cooper & Elliott
Businesses across the country have filed claims under their insurance policies for “business interruption” losses sustained because of government-ordered COVID-19 shutdowns. Insurance companies have largely denied these claims, resulting in nearly 1,500 lawsuits being filed against them by their policyholders. While early court decisions tended to favor insurance companies, the trend in Ohio now favors policyholders. We are working to hold insurance companies accountable. Cooper Elliott Partner Sean Alto is at the forefront of developments as he serves as Ohio co-chair for the American Association for Justice's COVID-19 Business Interruption Litigation Task Force.
