The rains last week meant many last minute calls for tents and looooong, wet days for our install teams. Thank you to all of our hard working crews (inside and outside the building) who are supporting our couples in the field!

Oh no...here comes the snow!
With the surge of outdoor dining the past year, restaurants have turned to tents and other temporary shelters to keep patrons reasonably comfortable while still complying with regulations. But what happens to a temporary structure when snow or ice is in the forecast? Depending on the composition and density of the snow, one cubic foot of snow can weigh between 10-30lbs. If we take a 20âx20â area, and assume an average of 1.25lbs per inch of snow, a snowfall of 2â would equal 1,000lbs of additional weight on that area.
If your temporary structure has a flat roof, you can expect the full weight of the snow load to accumulate across the surface area. For those restaurants with tents or canopies, the pitch of the tent will encourage the snow to slide to the eaves. This ponding effect greatly increases the load on just a few components which can lead to failure of the frame or canvas. In addition, snow sliding off the top of the tent or structure can pile up against the walls and increase the pressure on the frame, potentially leading to failure of the components.
To keep your shelters standing during and after a weather event involving ice or snow, the key is to ensure that accumulation does not outpace the melt rate. Ideally, maintaining an internal temp of 50 degrees inside the tent or structure will help melt the snow off the top. This may mean leaving heaters on overnight. If there is staff onsite, have the team monitor the snow accumulation and plan to periodically remove snow buildup by hand. For tents, snow can be removed by using the brush side of a broom and gently pushing up on the canvas from under the tent. Keep the sides clear of snow accumulation as well. During and after the weather event, you will want to check the tension straps to ensure the top is still securely tensioned to the frame.
Tents and temporary structures have greatly increased the capacity of restaurants to operate safely during COVID restrictions. With a little time and attention during adverse weather, your tent or structure will continue to provide value for the months ahead.

Hey restaurateurs - the Washington Hospitality Association published clarification on the Governor's newest outdoor dining guidelines (Jan 12, 2021). The full article is a great read but the key takeaway is that restaurants with bay doors now qualify for outdoor seating with the addition of a CO2 monitor.
And we have clarification that walls need to be open 4' to be considered for cross breeze ventilation.
