The Child’s Mathematical Mind

Maria Montessori designed unique math materials that develop the natural capabilities of a child’s “mathematical mind.” By incorporating concrete materials, such as the number rods, children literally “grasp” mathematical number concepts first in a concrete manner, by touching, feeling, holding, and naming the different lengths of the number rods. The number rods help children begin their understanding of the numbers 1 through 10, which are abstract concepts. Children can then relate the numbers 1-10 through the physical handling of the number rods. The sample principle applies to the golden beads that have different shapes and lengths. All lessons advance from simple to complex.
Most CountrySide Montessori School graduates universally demonstrate a solid understanding of the math concepts. They excel in math! Many students, before entering first grade, can add, subtract, multiply and divide 4-digit numbers at a concrete level.

Why Montessori?
The Montessori method provides individually paced learning and promotes and encourages empathy, independence and an authentic joy of learning.
Montessori materials are hands on, self correcting, purposeful and help develop children’s self esteem, confidence, self worth and happiness. It was quite a view, watching our children this week, joyfully initiating and choosing challenging materials to work with, making booklets of continents, parts of the fish, parts of the tree, rocks and constellations while having a big smile on their face, feeling peaceful and content.
Having a strong foundation in literacy and mathematics, together with exposure to a diversity of subjects and social settings that the Montessori prepared environment provides, can unlock the limitless potential our children’s minds have!

Spring is here! The children were excited to go outside today and embrace the sunshine while we looked for signs of spring. That led to making our own bird nests out of grass clippings and mud; now, our fig tree is embellished with at least 15 tiny nests! Did you know that it takes a bird several hundred flights in order to build it’s nest?
A great week was had by all, here @CountrySide Montessori School @Dacula and it is so rewarding to see our children flourish both academically and socially ❤️
