We all know that eating healthfully is important. Different foods can increase inflammation and impact our pain- for better or worse. Food is medicine and fuel for the body. Just as our cars are affected by the quality of the fuel we use, so too are our bodies. That’s why it’s important to be aware of which foods cause inflammation and needlessly increase pain. Civil rights, voting rights, gender rights, women’s rights, healthcare rights, workers rights and safety. The Supreme Court of the United States of America has been the final say in how we live our lives.
Talk about power.
These nine justices serve for life. And ultimately dictate for decades their perceptions and views on American law and justice.
We rarely think about them, or care who they are, until their actions impact us.
Without them we’d still have laws that allow, separate but equal. Continued age and gender discrimination. Voter suppression of large segments of the population. Companies to trample workers’ rights and health for profit. We just lost a giant

About 70 percent of our body is made up of water. We can last weeks without food but only 3 days without water. It is also a crucial component to include when trying to lose weight. Water helps us burn more calories, suppress our appetites and is 100 percent calorie free. Drinking 16 ounces of water adds weight and heaviness to the stomach, stopping any sense of urgency to eat because the circulating hunger hormones have been satisfied. [ 1,181 more word ]

Stress can have many impacts on the human body including causing fatigue, depression, anxiety, poor sleep, weight fluctuations, and increased pain. Particularly now, when the world and everything around us has changed so dramatically, learning ways to de-stress is more important than ever. Meditation and hypnosis have both been shown to have a positive impact on managing stress and the resulting effects. Who among us couldn’t benefit from a few minutes a day to relax and calm our minds? Cinema has portrayed both hypnosis and meditation in an exaggerated light, leading people to misunderstand the concept and benefits. Here’s how both methods can help how you manage stress and improve mental and physical well being.

This week’s exercise is a slight modification of a classic crunch. You may have done a similar variation before, where you shift from side to side and touch each heel; this movement however, has you completing more of the “crunch” movement, working different parts of your core.

For those of us with pets, coming home to a wagging ball of fluff whose sole desire is to love us, can be a powerful way to de-stress at the end of a long day. It’s estimated over 71 million households in America have pets. That’s 62% of us. For most, they’re a part of the family. As such, they affect the quality of our lives everyday, improving our health and well being through their unconditional love and acceptance. Research studies have found that people with pets are healthier, stay home sick less often, make fewer visits to the doctor, get more exercise, have less pain and are less depressed. The better we understand this unique bond, the more we can use it to improve people’s lives.

Slim down. Cure your cancer. Prevent heart attacks. Live longer. Improve joint health. Glucose control. Reports that intermittent fasting could help with the biggest health concerns facing people have inspired millions to take it up. Initially the data seemed to agree- it works. I know many patients and friends who advocate the benefits and tout the results. But a new randomized clinical study just published in JAMA says otherwise.

As we’ve shared in many previous exercise posts, stability and strength are crucial elements of fitness. It’s not all about hitting a certain weight, pant size, or look. And by strength, we don’t mean being able to lift like an Olympian. Physical fitness is a combination of factors, but the underlying truth is that if you are lacking fundamental strength and stability, you are more likely to become injured completing even routine movements. This week’s exercise, like many others, focuses on stability (maintaining balance throughout the movement) and strength (in holding your own body weight).

The pandemic has thrown everybody for a loop in ways that we couldn’t have imagined. Jobs and financial security were up-ended and remain uncertain. Family routines are disrupted. Social structures are fractured. The daily norm has been thrown out the window. We’ve all been trained to believe that if we work harder, faster, more precisely, that we will persevere and overcome. Those are all admirable qualities, but when pushing through the chaos starts to weigh heavily on our mental health, it is important to be aware of the signs that we may be slipping into a depressed state.

The current state of the world has resulted in many, if not most, physicians offering telemedicine as an alternative for patients that opt to not come into the office for an in-person check up. This may seem like the ideal solution- offering solutions to individuals who seek them, while providing an avenue that limits physical contact and lingering in an office around other sick patients. But it overlooks many risk factors that occur with the “click and cure” approach. What about things that cannot be seen or measured via a virtual exam or over the phone, like a temperature, heart rhythm, blood pressure, lung function, etc?
