An exciting new set of fossilized human footprints have been found at White Sands. They span nearly one mile on the flat desert playa making it the longest track of fossilized human footprints ever discovered!
The footprints are thought to have been made by two people: an adult female (or adolescent male), and a child less than 3 years old. However, they were not alone. They walked among giants.
The fossilized footprints reveal that a giant sloth, approximately 12 feet tall, and Columbian mammoths, a towering height of 14 feet, crossed paths with these people. While the mammoth tracks show no reaction to the human prints, the giant sloths’ tracks indicate that it stood on its hind legs, likely looking for the people.
