Extended wear of high heels and continually bending your toes into an unnatural position can cause a range of ailments, from ingrown toenails to irreversible damage to leg tendons. Additionally, cramming your toes into a narrow toe box can cause nerve damage and bunions

Finding a good shoe is important if you have diabetes. Below are some tips that may help.
Look for a lightweight shoe that lets your feet move and breathe.
Choose a flexible material, such as leather, canvas, or suede.
Remember that a good diabetic shoe should have a shock-absorbing sole, which will help relieve pressure on the bottom of your foot.
Pick shoes with laces that you can loosen or tighten. This makes it easier to accommodate any swelling or changes in your feet over time.
Keep in mind that the shoe should also have a solid back to provide extra support.

An ingrown toenail is a common, easy to fix, problem. However, it’s important to not underestimate the issue and get it treated.
If left untreated, an ingrown toenail infection can cause an infection in the bone in your toe. A toenail infection can also lead to foot ulcers, or open sores, and a loss of blood flow to the infected area. Tissue decay and tissue death at the site of infection are possible.
At CT Family Foot Care we can treat your ingrown toenail, call (203) 288-0129 or visit ctfamilyfoot.com to schedule an appointment

You’ve probably heard that diabetes can cause serious ulcers on your feet. Did you know it can also break down the actual structure of your foot? Charcot foot is a condition in which a patient who has nerve damage to the feet (usually caused by diabetes) experiences a series of injuries and changes to the bones and joints of the feet. Over time, these injuries cause the foot to break down and change shape. If you have diabetes, check your feet daily for any changes, especially if you have nerve damage, and be sure to see your podiatrist at least once a year! www.apma.org/charcotfoot
We don't like to think of our feet as fragile. Actually, we know that our feet are amazingly though. However, too much of a beating, and too long with the wrong kind of treatment can lead to pain, and chronic injury. Here are some things you can stop doing to take care of your feet:
-Going barefoot or using flip flops: Without proper arch support, your arches will flatten over time, causing flat feet, and the painful injury of plantar fasciitis.
-Wearing high heels: High heels completely change your natural walking gait, and can even shorten your calf muscles, and damage your lower back.
-Not wearing socks: Socks protect your feet from unwanted friction, and help your feet breathe by wicking moisture from sweat or outside sources such as rain or snow.
However, If you are experiencing foot injuries, make an appointment with Dr.Paragas! Visit Ctfamilyfoot.com or call (203) 288-0129

A lot of people, exercisers and non-exercisers, have pain and fatigue in their feet. This can be caused by unsupportive shoes, strain, and several other factors. Exercises to strengthen the arches of your feet have been shown to ease foot pain and foot fatigue.
A study released in 2008, showed that the abductor hallucis muscle (a bottom of the arch muscle) supports the arch by contracting and controlling proper foot posture while standing. This foot posture is called “pronation”. If the posture is off, it can cause the foot to roll to the left or right. When this happens, you may develop other problems like shin splints, plantar fasciitis and even pain in the legs and joints.

The only equipment you need to enjoy walking for fitness is a good pair of shoes. But before you can shop for the best shoe for your foot, read these important tips for buying a good pair of walking shoes
Shop at the end of the day when your feet are slightly swollen to get a good fit.
Try on shoes with the socks you will wear when walking. If you use an orthotic, bring that to the store when you try on shoes as well.
Have your feet measured standing up and fit your shoes to the larger of your two feet.
Be sure there is enough room in the toe box for your toes to wiggle and about a half inch between your toes and the end of the shoe.
Take time when shopping to try on different brands and walk around the store in each pair. Be sure to walk on a hard surface, not just on carpeting. Let your foot be the guide to the fit, not the shoe size or style.
Look for lightweight, breathable materials for greater comfort.

Never put regular diabetic foot care on the back burner. What seems like a minor cut or bruise can lead to major foot complications if left unchecked. People with diabetes are at an increased risk to develop ulcers on their feet. If you have diabetes, keep up with daily foot checks and regular visits to your podiatrist for treatment. Failure to do so can lead to serious complications. Learn more: https://www.apma.org/diabeticwoundcare
