Hello and welcome to my weekly update from the Currier Museum’s project on the Frank Lloyd Wright houses! My name is Semine and I am the NEH Graduate Fellow at the Currier Museum. Over the next couple of months, I will be helping the curators at the Currier with telling the story of the Zimmerman House and the Kalil House. As someone who is always somewhat away from home (I grew up in Denmark with a dad from Malaysia), I’ve thought a lot about what it takes to build a home. I was struck by this sketch of the Kalils: they are drawn in their future carport, nestled between forest and mountains, sheltered from curious gazes of Manchester town. They asked Wright to design a home for them but did their dream house actually make them feel at home? The story of a house is the story of people. Stay tuned!

The Currier’s Memory Café
The Currier Museum’s Art and Community programs serve a variety of audiences in need. Each of these programs offer art looking and artmaking as catalysts for individuals to express themselves and their feelings, and to explore new ideas. The Currier’s Memory Café is one of these programs designed for people with memory loss, their caregivers and loved ones.
While we have not been able to meet in person since March, we have developed a series of virtual Memory Cafes for people to access safely from home.

“I want you to look at ‘Whispering Quilts’ and walk in my shoes for a moment. I want the audience to see how important the story is and learn from it. I want them to ask themselves why this happened and, more importantly, why we still can’t embrace each other as human beings” – Richard Haynes

Dear friends,
Yesterday evening, Manchester’s Zoning Board of Adjustment approved the subdivision of 147 Walnut Street, which is the major hurdle in the sale of the Chandler House to the Currier Museum. We were so touched by all the letters and petitions of support from neighbors, civic leaders, and lovers of architecture.
Thank you all so much. We have a lot more to do, but we are on the way. This historic house truly belongs to the entire community!

“Lucille Zimmerman had several requests for her new house. She needed space for her “time saving devices” that she used in her work as a homemaker, nurse, secretary, and amateur musician. Lucille’s idea of a “functional home” included a large deep freezer for meal planning, and plentiful storage for her uniforms and clothes that she often sewed herself. In Lucille’s kitchen, I spotted Irma S. Rombauer’s blue covered “Joy of Cooking,” which made me wonder what dishes she prepared in the 1950s. Beef stews? Roast turkey? Boiled rice? Maybe you can help me?”

Happy birthday to painter Childe Hassam, born on this day in 1859. Hassam was an American Impressionist painter, known for his luminous paintings. The Goldfish Window, a beloved painting in the Currier’s collection, is part of his series of window paintings, typically featuring well-appointed interiors, a contemplative woman, and natural light flooding the scene.

“The Zimmermans transformed their house into an art piece – perhaps even a museum – where they could stage their cultured lifestyle. Here, Lucille poses with a hat and fur coat. In the background, there’s a still life of fruits, a grand piano, Japanese screens, a sculpture of a horse, and their custom-made music stand, also designed by Wright. Why might it have been important for the Zimmermans to communicate – to themselves and others – that they were “cultured”? Did they hope that the Frank Lloyd Wright house would elevate their status in a social context they otherwise felt excluded from?”

We’re always making changes in the galleries! Now on view is Bernard Buffet’s Arlequin, on loan to the museum from a generous anonymous lender. Buffet was a prominent 20th-century French Expressionist painter. He was committed to figurative painting during a time when abstraction was becoming increasingly popular, and was a member of the French anti-abstract artist group, L’Homme témoin. His painting joins Expressionist works by Max Pechstein and others.

“A few years after the Zimmermans commissioned a house from Frank Lloyd Wright, their friends Mildred and Toufic Kalil, who were colleagues at the hospital where they worked, were inspired to work with Wright too. The Kalils bought a plot of land on Heather Street for their own Usonian home, the same street where the Zimmermans’ house was built. The story of the houses is also a story of friendship, of neighbors with shared common interests such as music and nature, and of couples who aged together. Here, we see Isadore Zimmerman sitting on the Kalils’ terrace, with newspapers spread out, and a visiting bird.”

🖼 We’re always making changes in the galleries! Now on view in the Contemporary Gallery is Jean-Paul Riopelle’s Clairons (Buglers). Riopelle was an Abstract Expressionist painter, with close personal ties to many of the artists whose work is also on view in the gallery, including Joan Mitchell. This work is particularly striking, with intense colors and heavy application of oil paint, or impasto, applied with slashes of a palette knife. Well known in his native Canada, his work is only beginning to get the critical acclaim it deserves in the United States.

“We often forget that Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs included efforts and ideas from his clients and apprentices. Here’s an example: in the photo, we see Mildred Kalil on the construction site next to what became the guest house. This detached building was not part of the initial plan, but close to the completion of the Usonian Automatic, Mildred and Toufic Kalil decided that they wanted a separate space to host their visitors. They asked Morton Delson, the young apprentice working for Wright, to design this spontaneous addition with the leftover concrete blocks. This story illustrates that Wright’s architecture is actually the product of a collaborative, organic process.”

Happy birthday to Claude Monet, born on this day in 1840. This painting, The Bridge at Bougival, marks an important transition in Monet’s work. Upon his arrival in Bougival, outdoor painting became a mainstay in his work, and his commitment to the exploration of the various effects of light on the landscape solidified. In this painting we see the artist carefully studying the various effects of light: from the sun reflecting through the clouds, to it sparkling on the water, to the playful shadows cast by the trees.

“Both the Kalils and the Zimmermans enjoyed music. The Kalils had their record player built into a special piece of furniture in the corner of the living room. The Zimmermans played the piano, violin, and cello and also had a custom-made furniture piece for music - the Wright-designed string quartet stand. The Zimmermans in particular saw themselves as a cultural resource in Manchester and took on an educational role, inspiring people around them with their joy of music.”

“Upon reviewing the initial drawings of their house, the Kalils suggested several adjustments. For instance, they asked for a rearrangement of the glass area on the south wall, “to provide more indoor-outdoor continuity.” By asking for more permeability, they demonstrated their knowledge of Wright’s principles and that clients were co-authors of his architecture. Here, we see the Usonian concrete blocks that serve as both wall and window frames to enable a transparency between the outside and the inside.”

"The Kalils and the Zimmermans collected modern art and both couples were involved with the Currier Museum of Art. Their interest in contemporary art made them different from the Manchester elite serving as trustees at the museum. The Currier’s bulletins from the 1950s reveal a tension between new impulses of modern art and the “conservative-minded” museum goers who appreciated realism. While the conservative currents at the Currier were committed to the preservation of the American colonial past and landscape historic painting, the Zimmermans dreamt of being “done forever with living in the 18th century.”

"The Zimmermans documented their beloved home as the seasons changed. One example is this portrait of the snow-covered house hidden in the pine trees. Such portraits were not only taken as private memories but distributed to friends and family. During the holiday season, the house became their brand: they used a Taliesin sketch of the house as their central image for their Christmas cards."

In an interview from the 1990s, friends of the Zimmermans, David and Barbara Stahl, recalled how Lucille and Isadore left all their belongings behind when they moved into their Frank Lloyd Wright house in 1951. It was a new start to a larger project of self-realization. The couple did not entertain often, nor did they partake in usual pastime activities such as bridge and poker. Rather, they nurtured their interests in photography, art, and hiking. They became immersed in their enthusiasm for Wright. Here is an example of a note where they archived mentions of Wright’s work: they kept a close track of publications by and about him.

“Parrish was known for his carefully crafted and vibrantly colored paintings. He achieved this luminous scene by using a historic painting technique called glazing, wherein thin layers of vivid, translucent paint are alternated with layers of clear varnish. Though this scene may look idealized, I can tell you from experience that this is in fact how beautiful twilight can be on a clear winter night in New Hampshire.”

James VanDerZee created vibrant portraits of Black New Yorkers during the Harlem Renaissance in the 1920s, when new African American arts flourished. VanDerZee sought to showcase the beauty and dignity of his sitters. His photographs celebrated a dynamic and proud community that created a culture outside of the dominant white narrative.

📣Last year, the Currier Museum of Art announced that the State of New Hampshire allocated CARES Act funds to us through Swim With A Mission, a nonprofit that raises money for veteran service organizations.
⭐️Thanks to this funding, we have been able to expand our support and programming for veterans, active service members, and their families who have been negatively impacted during the COVID-19 pandemic.
🎉We are excited to share that we are well underway with the construction project made possible by this funding, renovating a 2,000-square-foot space for dedicated art therapy programs that permit social distancing and digital engagement.
🎨Remote art therapy, for veterans unable to physically attend programs at the museum, will be significantly enhanced with these renovations.
‼️The programs are all free of charge for veterans, active military, and their families. No previous art background is required to join.
➡️Visit our website to learn more about all our Art for Veterans programs.
🎂Happy Birthday, Joan Mitchell! 🎂
🎉“When I was young, it never occurred to me to invent. All I wanted to do was paint.”
🎉Joan Mitchell was born on this day in 1925. She was of the few female members of the abstract expressionists of her generation to achieve acclaim during her lifetime. This painting, Cous-cous, features the bold brushstrokes and strong colors for which she became known in the early 1960s. The painting pulses with energy.

🥳HAPPY BIRTHDAY MATTIA PRETI!🥳
Mattia Preti was born on this day in 1613. Preti was a Baroque artist who worked in Italy and Malta. Martyrdom of St. Bartholomew epitomizes the Baroque affinity for dramatic and theatrical compositions, achieved through strong diagonal lines, affected gestures, and the play of light and dark.
