A heartfelt post written by a studio owner in Melbourne
Every little dancer was ready. Ready to go back to their beloved studio, ready to put on their uniform and shoes, ready to do their hair in a bun, ready to see their friends and teachers, and ready to dance.
Then we got the news
“We are back in stage 3 lockdown”
Every studio owners heart sank......for we know the disappointment our dancers would now be facing, and we are now scared for our businesses and futures....for the second time in 6 months.
People are losing jobs and income, kids can’t go to school, grandparents can’t see their grandkids, no one can visit each other or celebrate birthdays, anniversaries and special occasions.
This is a plea to the dance parents of Melbourne
Many of these dance studios have been opened for 10, 15, 20, 40 and 50 years (and some even more) and some are now facing permanent closure.
Studio owners are tired, anxious and are watching their enrolments drop before their eyes. The “my child doesn’t like zoom but will come back when the studio opens” emails
The “zoom isn’t as good as in the studio so we aren’t doing it” emails
The “we want discounts for classes being on zoom” emails
The “We have lost our jobs” emails
The “you can’t reduce the class times and not take money off our fees” emails
Every email is tearing us apart.
The income lost throughout dance studios in Victoria is into the millions.
Studios are NOT a hobby for us. They are our main income source. We support staff, pay rent and still have to put food on the table at the end of the day.
Dance is your child’s safe space.
Dance has played a part in developing your child’s self confidence and self worth.
Dance is where they can express themselves. Dance is what makes your child happy.
Dance has taught your children much more than steps. It had taught them independence, confidence and goal setting. They have made many lifelong friends and they love their teachers.
We KNOW that online classes are not the same as in the studio. Believe me we know.
We have had to re-teach ourselves to teach dance in a 2 x 4 loungeroom, bedroom or spare room. We have had to learn to teach choreography and skills that dancers can do safely without hurting themselves on a couch or a coffee table. We have had to change everything we know about dance. And we had to do it quickly.
Saying “we will just come back when you open up” might seem ok now, but unfortunately the reality is that many will not open up. Without your financial support, there will be NO STUDIO for your child to return to.
So I ask you, if you can afford it, please pay your child’s fees. Don’t ask for discounts because you think the classes aren’t worth it. Your studio owners are teachers are killing themselves for your kids. We want nothing more than to be able to go back to the studio now, but this cannot be helped.
I know for a fact that many studios are still carrying families who are out of work. But there are many families who are still employed too.
Please support the studios that have supported your children. Even if you don’t like online classes, even if you think online isn’t worth it, consider supporting them anyway.
Dance is the best gift we can give your children. Don’t let the flame burn out for these incredible businesses. We are hurting, mentally and financially.
