Great article by CBS Sports - but a little disappointed to see the National Collegiate Athletic Association’s Monday decision to delay enacting legislation on name, image, and likeness rights. Given the unprecedented nature of the legislation & the desire by many to see the NCAA pause until the Supreme Court has ruled on Halston vs. NCAA, the delay is understandable. Also very interested to see the outcome of another front delayed by the NCAA: legislation that would allow athletes immediate eligibility without having to sit idle for a year in residence. Hopes are high to see decisions on these in 2021.

https://medicalxpress.com/news/2021-01-fatty-acid-combat-multiple-sclerosis.html
In a new study released this week, Yale University posits that the immune response that causes MS may be triggered by the lack of a specific fatty acid in tissue, which suggests that, along with genetic and environmental causes, diet may play a role in the development of MS. While it is yet to be determined whether a diet high in oleic acid could help combat MS in patients, this is an interesting, and hopeful, new development for those suffering from it.

According to Disability Scoop, President-elect Joe Biden has announced, as one of his first major undertakings in office, the decades-old and antiquated option for employers to pay workers with disabilities less than minimum wage. The plan would also provide Covid-19 stimulus checks directly to disabled citizens who are currently considered dependents under the law. This would be a major step forward in fair treatment and inclusivity of disabled people, and I’m very hopeful to see the President-elect have success in this endeavor!

https://www.latimes.com/california/story/2021-01-26/as-californis-shifts-to-age-based-covid-19-vaccine-essential-workers-disabled-n
Following Gavin Newsom's Monday announcement that the priority for #Covid-19 vaccinations within the state would be shifting to an age-based eligibility structure, concern is rising among groups like essential workers & the disabled over what this means for their chances of being vaccinated. These at-risk groups, who often already face difficulties getting vaccinated due to work schedules & disabilities that hinder travel, fear that they will be left behind due to the new priority. While it is understandable that the goal is to vaccinate as many people as possible, essential workers & the at-risk health-wise should always receive priority because they often have no choice but to risk exposure, and if at-risk, have a higher mortality rate. This, combined with Newsom’s decision to roll back the stay-at-home order, seems like a risky combination.

Per KQED California’s shift to a new phase of age-based prioritization for Covid-19 vaccinations may deal a devastating blow to disabled citizens, pushing younger Californians with disabilities to the back of the line and as such putting them at continued risk. These citizens were already at the back of the line behind healthcare professionals & essential workers, and now have to wait behind some 16.5 million seniors. This decision was a callous oversight by the California state government and Gavin Newsom, and I am hopeful to see the age-based vaccination rule allow exceptions for disabled people, who are often at a much higher risk than the seniors now receiving priority.

From KBTX Media, Every year, thousands of Americans are stuck waiting for their disability benefit decisions due to an extreme backlog of cases, with delays only made worse by Covid-19’s impact on Social Security office turnaround time, the average wait time for which is 150 to 550 days. The #disability claim processing system desperately needs an overhaul - in the last decade alone, 110,000 Americans have died while waiting for their claims to be processed. A new federal legislative proposal regarding college athlete name, image, and likeness rights has been introduced on Capitol Hill, Forbes reported Saturday. The bill is known as “The College Athlete Economic Freedom Act” and will aim to protect the NIL rights of current collegiate student-athlete, making it the very first legislation to also provide these rights to prospective collegiate student-athletes. I have high hopes for this bill, authored by Senator Chris Murphy; it would be a monumental step forward in NIL legislation and I am excited to see it progress.

In an article yesterday, The Guardian shone a light on an often-overlooked type of disability, learning disabilities, and how they are often not prioritized in medical settings. A new review of Do Not Resuscitate orders has raised concerns among care home residents that they will be barred from life-saving treatments because of their learning disabilities. This, coupled with Covid and the drastic difference in mortality rate between non-disabled and disabled people and the already-documented prejudices against those with learning disabilities, could be potentially deadly for many.
