~Cookie NOAA Thunder Bay National Marine Sanctuary November 10 at 7:31 AM · Today, a solemn tribute to the 29 crewmen lost on the SS EDMUND FITZGERALD on November 10, 1975. The 729-foot FITZGERALD, dubbed the "Titanic of the Great Lakes," was carrying a full cargo of taconite ore pellets when it embarked on the final voyage of the year from Superior, Wisconsin. The next day, the massive freighter was caught in near hurricane-force winds and 35-foot high waves and sank in 530 feet of water, just 17 miles from the entrance to Whitefish Bay. The image shown here, from the Thunder Bay Sanctuary Research Collection, shows the FITZGERALD nestled in the snow in 1958, the year it was built.

Davey Bones is hosting a New Year’s Eve event at Gilboa Quarry this year. We have gotten permission from Mike Williams to ring in the new year at midnight underwater! You must have a minimum of 25 dives and show proof of a Night Diving certification. We will be restricted to the shallow side of Gilboa and ALL divers will need to check in and out of the water with one of the Davey Bones staff members. We will have heated canopies set up and a fire to stay warm. Davey Bones will be cooking dinner at the quarry before the dives. We will have more details on the menu and meal ticket price to cover our food expense soon so keep checking back. Message the page with any questions.
