The National Prescription Drug Take Back Day addresses a crucial public safety and public health issue. According to the 2018 National Survey on Drug Use and Health, 9.9 million Americans misused controlled prescription drugs. The study shows that a majority of abused prescription drugs were obtained from family and friends, often from the home medicine cabinet. We’re learning new things about masks all the time, but this is what we know now. When worn correctly, double-layered cotton and cloth masks block 71-90% of infectious respiratory droplets from getting in or out. That means both you AND those around you are protected when you wear your mask. Maybe not perfect, but pretty close. #MaskUpUtah

We’re learning new things about masks all the time, but this is what we know now. Health care providers, especially in the operating room, wear masks for up to 10 hours a day without experiencing any harmful effects. What’s more, they’ve been wearing masks since the 1920s without suffering from carbon dioxide poisoning, pleurisy, or a weakened immune system. If it’s safe for them, it’s safe for us! #MaskUpUtah

We’re learning new things about masks all the time, but this is what we know now. Research shows that 40% of COVID-19 transmissions happen up to 48 hours before people experience any symptoms. That means you could infect dozens of people, like friends and family, without even knowing it. The best way to keep you and your loved ones safe is to wear a mask. #MaskUpUtah

We’re learning new things about masks all the time, but this is what we know now. Here’s how it works: Masks slow the spread of COVID-19. Less COVID-19 in the community means more things open: schools, restaurants, businesses, churches. We can’t have a healthy economy without healthy people, which is why it’s crucial to wear a mask until this virus is behind us. #MaskUpUtah

Today, the Utah Fire Service lost a well-known and respected paramedic firefighter. Doug Robison, a 42-year veteran of the fire service began his career with Kaysville Fire Department in 1978. Throughout his prestigious career, Doug worked for Davis County Sheriff’s Office, Layton City Fire Department and for Unified Fire Authority, retiring in 2015. In 2018, Doug joined the Syracuse Fire Department as a volunteer peer support mentor where he helped create the Davis County Peer Support Task Force. Doug was a good friend to us all and positively affected so many lives throughout his career; a debt that can only be repaid by continuing his legacy of love and compassion for our fellow brother and sister firefighters. Doug’s family would like to thank all who have reached out and ask for continued privacy as they work through the grieving process. Details regarding services will be posted as they become available.

Respiratory Therapists (RT) are the hidden heroes inside the hospital. They are the skilled professionals who help to keep our patients breathing. COVID patients very often have compromised breathing and the demand on RT's has been taken to a new level. Our RT, Jennifer, was among the first to get the vaccine. We asked her opinion about COVID-19. "We work with high risk patients all day long in the ER and ICU. The pandemic has brought about a lot of changes in health care that I think will stay long after the virus is gone, and that's a good thing. I feel very safe getting the vaccine and taking care of my patients."
We are very thankful to our pharmacist, Allen Miller, who was essential in preparing the hospital for the arrival of the COVID-19 vaccine. When asked about his thoughts on the vaccine, Allen said he is amazed that the FDA was able to remove the red tape so all of the appropriate testing could be done and the vaccine could get to the public so quickly. When asked about his thoughts on getting the vaccine, Allen (who is also a biochemist) doesn't have any hesitation about getting vaccinated.
Dr. Reynolds isn't shy about sharing his thoughts on the COVID-19 vaccine. "I think this vaccine is one of the greatest things that has happened in medicine. The development of it is unprecedented in our time, practically a medical miracle. I'm grateful to receive it."
Today as we began administering the COVID-19 vaccine to our frontline staff, we asked for their thoughts on the pandemic. Over the next few days, we'll post some of their insightful and touching comments. Brian Law, ER Nurse, was the first at Davis Hospital to get the vaccine. “I’m thrilled about being one of the first vaccinated at our hospital. I don’t have any worries about receiving it, the sooner the better,” said Brian. He added, “My vaccination adds even another layer of protection for the patients I treat.”
Thank you Cafe Rio Mexican Grill Layton, Utah for the delicious burritos for our Operating Room staff. We appreciate their support of our amazing, dedicated team!
We've been preparing for this day: the first doses of the COVID-19 vaccine arrived at our hospital. Dr. Christine Anderegg was the first ER physician to be vaccinated this morning. “This will be a good long-term fix for us, but for now we need to remember to continue wearing masks, washing hands, and social distancing. I’m excited to get my vaccination!”
As we continue to vaccinate our team of health care providers, we spoke with Heidi, a Respiratory Therapist, who has been working with patients at Davis Hospital for many years. She would like to reassure everyone that the hospital is safe for patients. "We are professionals. We follow strict protocols, like wearing PPE, to keep us, our patients, and each other safe."
Thank you so much to the kind citizens of Layton that donated over 200 chocolate candies with messages of support to our front line staff. We are touched by the time and effort put in to making these. Our staff loved them!
May the magic of the season put a smile on your face and joy in your heart. Happy Holidays from all of us at Davis Hospital!
Dr. Gurjeet Grover, a Pulmonologist who works in our ICU, received his vaccine. He thinks those who meet the criteria should get vaccinated when they are able to. "It is to their benefit and the benefit of our community. Based on the data, it is very effective and I for one want this over. It's been a long year."
Thank you Black Bear Diner in Layton for the dinner for our hard-working Respiratory Therapists. They help keep our patients breathing - thank you for helping to keep them nourished. We appreciate the overwhelming kindness of our community!
Elizabeth, a phlebotomist at Davis Hospital, was excited to receive her vaccine. Her thoughts on the vaccine are clear. "I had COVID over 5 months ago and it was not fun. So anything I can do to help get life back to normal for everyone, I should do it. I don't want anyone else to have to go through it."
